Oakland was the surprise winner of the AL West for the second straight year a season ago, beating out the large payrolls of the Angels and Rangers en route to an ALDS loss to the Tigers. The A's would love nothing more than a 3-peat but this time with a more lasting postseason mark. The Indians also turned some heads in 2013, capturing an AL wild card berth and they look to get off to another quick start Monday.
Cleveland sends Justin Masterson to the hill as he aims for 2014 to be an exodus from mediocrity. Masterson has posted double-digit losses in each of the last four seasons including last year's 14-10 record. Masterson has proven he can be an elite pitcher at times, hurling three complete game shutouts in 2013 but the 3.45 ERA needs to be lowered to approach a 20-win season. Masterson dazzled in the Spring, posting a 4-0 record in 6 starts while allowing only 3 runs in 24 IP. Masterson went 1-1 a year ago against Oakland, allowing 3 runs in both starts while pitching into the 7th each time.
Sonny Gray gets the ball for Bob Melvin's A's on Monday night at the Oakland-Alameda County Stadium. The 24-year-old Gray enters his first season as a full-time starter with big expectations as the Opening Day starter. Gray went 5-3 a year ago, posting an impressive 2.67 ERA. No current Indians player has ever faced Gray so it will be a day of new beginnings all around.
