Friday night, Trevor Bauer (4 – 6, 4.20 ERA) gets the call for the Cleveland Indians as they take on Chase Whitley (4 – 3, 5.06 ERA) and the New York Yankees.  Bauer makes his 17th start as Whitley makes his 13th start and 17th appearance.

Trevor Bauer missed getting the decision in his last start despite a fine start for the young right-hander.  In that outing, Bauer allowed 3 runs on 6 hits in 7.1 innings as he walked 4 and struck out 4.  Good starts have been few and far between for Bauer this season and in his last 10 starts, he has given up 3 or more runs 9 times.  He is 3 - 3 in those 10 starts.   Last season, Bauer was 1 – 2 with a 5.29 ERA in 4 starts.

Bauer lost his only start against the Yankees in 2013 after allowing 3 runs and 6 hits in 6.1 innings.  Earlier this season, he beat New York after holding them to 3 runs and 4 hits through 7 innings. 

Chase Whitley pitched just 2 innings in his last appearance but it wasn’t one for the highlight reels.  He surrendered 2 runs on 2 hits (including a home run) while walking a batter and striking out 2.  The injuries that have decimated the New York starting rotation have given Whitley a chance to impress but he really hasn’t.   In the Minors this season before getting the call, Whitley was 3 -2 with a 2.39 ERA in 6 starts and a relief appearance.

Whitley has a victory over the Tribe and it came in a 2 inning relief appearance in early July.  In that outing, Whitley allowed just a hit while striking out 3.
