Sunday afternoon, the Cleveland Indians will start Corey Kluber against the Chicago White Sox and Jose Quintana.   Both pitchers will be making their third starts of the season.

Corey Kluber picked up his first win of the season in his second start after a 6 inning outing where he surrendered 3 runs on 9 hits while striking out 8.   Kluber’s first start of the year contributed greatly to his inflated ERA of 7.71.  Last season he was much better, earning an 11 – 5 record with an ERA of 3.85 in 24 starts and 2 relief appearances.

In 2013, Kluber started 2 games against the White Sox and ended up with a 1 – 0 record and an ERA of 3.95.  He gave up 14 hits and 6 runs in 13.2 innings.  But overall, the White Sox hitters shouldn’t be much trouble for Kluber this time around.  Chicago’s Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko are each batting .273 in 11 at-bats against Kluber.

Jose Quintana has looked good in his first two starts of the season.  In his last outing, he got the win after a 7 inning, 2 run, and 5 hit performance.  His ERA so far is 2.77, which is well below last year’s 3.51 ERA that he earned along with a 9 – 7 record in 33 starts.

Last season, Quintana faced the Indians 4 times for a 1 - 0 record and an ERA of 3.52.  In those 4 games, the Indians got 10 runs on 17 hits.  The Cleveland roster is only batting .217 against Quintana but Michael Brantley is hitting .455 with 5 hits and 2 RBIs in 11 at-bats
