Wednesday afternoon, the Cincinnati Reds will take the field behind Alfredo Simon as they square off against the Washington Nationals and Tanner Roark. Both pitchers will be making their 9th starts of the season.

Alfredo Simon comes into this one after a win in his last start that improved his record to 5 – 2 with an ERA of 2.45.  In that outing, Simon pitched 7.2 innings of shutout ball and allowed just 5 hits and a walk while striking out 8.  Last season, Simon worked exclusively out of the bullpen and compiled a record of 6 – 4 with a save and an ERA of 2.87 in 63 relief appearances.

In 2013, Simon made 2 appearances against the Nationals and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in 4 innings of work.  Simon might want to keep an eye on Washington’s Jayson Werth.  Werth is 2 for 3 against the right-hander. 

Tanner Roark improved his record to 3 – 1 and with a 3.65 ERA after getting a win in his last outing. In that start, Roark allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in 5 innings with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.  In 2013, Roark went 7 - 1 with an ERA of 1.51 in 5 starts and 9 relief appearances during his rookie campaign. 

Last season, Roark didn’t face the Reds and he lacks any experience against the Cincinnati lineup.  With some help from the scouting report and the rest of the pitching staff, he should be able to handle anything that he might see.
