Thursday afternoon, Homer Bailey gets the call for the Cincinnati Reds as they square off against Jeff Locke and the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Bailey makes his 15th start as Locke makes his 4th.

Homer Bailey didn’t factor in the decision his last time out and that held his record at 7 – 3 with a 4.68 ERA.  In that outing, Bailey surrendered 4 runs and 6 hits (including a home run) in 6.1 innings.  He walked 3 and struck out 6.  Prior to his last start, Bailey had won the last 4 outings and he is well on pace to improve on his results from 2013 when he went 11- 12 with a 3.49 ERA in 32 starts.

Last season, Bailey was 0 – 3 with a 4.30 ERA in 4 starts against the Pirates.  This season, Bailey got a no-decision in his start against Pittsburgh after allowing 5 runs on 8 hits (including 4 home runs) in 5 innings of work.

Jeff Locke missed getting the decision in his last outing and that kept his record at 0 – 1 with a 3.98 ERA.  Locke was solid in that start though, as he surrendered just 2 runs and 7 hits (including a homer) in 8 innings.  Injuries in the starting rotation will give Locke some more chances to start and he should be able to get close to last year’s numbers of 10 wins and 7 losses and an ERA of 3.52 in 30 starts.

In 2013, Locke was 2 – 1 with a 3.32 ERA in 4 starts against the Reds. Cincinnati’s Todd Frazier is 4 of 9 with a homer and 2 RBIs against Locke.
