Saturday evening, Homer Bailey gets the call for the Cincinnati Reds as they take on Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies. Bailey will be making his 9th start as Hamels makes his 5th.

Homer Bailey improved to 3 – 2 with a 4.72 ERA after getting the win in his last outing.  In that start, Bailey allowed just a run on 4 hits (including a home run) in 7.1 innings with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts.  It’s believed that a change in delivery improved Bailey’s results.  Any change would be helpful if Bailey wants to post better results this year than he did in 2013 when he went 11 – 12 with a 3.49 ERA in 32 starts.

Last season, Bailey didn’t get a decision in his 2 starts against the Phillies.  But he pitched 15 scoreless innings and allowed just 7 hits.    If he wants to keep up the scoreless streak, he will need to stay away from Marlon Byrd.  Byrd is batting .375 with 2 home runs and 7 RBIs against Bailey.   

Cole Hamels looked solid in his last start even though he didn’t get the decision.  Hamels allowed just a run on 7 hits in 7 innings as he walked 3 and struck out 10.  But Hamels brings a 0 - 2 record and an ERA of 5.32 into this one.  Last season, Hamels was 8 -14 with a 3.60 ERA in 33 starts.

In 2013, Hamels didn’t face the Reds but he knows the lineup well.  Cincinnati hitters are just batting .212 against Hamels with 4 homers and 12 RBIs in 99 at-bats.
