Saturday night, Mike Leake will take the hill for the Cincinnati Reds as they face David Hale and the Atlanta Braves.   Leake will make his 5th start as Hale makes his 4th.

Mike Leake didn’t get the decision in his last start after surrendering 4 runs on 8 hits in 7 innings of work.  His line doesn’t look that bad when you consider that the 4 runs came on a grand slam home run.  Overall, Leake is 2 – 1 with a 3.49 ERA this season and should equal or better his results in 2013 when he went 14 – 7 with a 3.37 ERA in 31 starts. 

Last season, Leake lost his only start against the Braves after giving up 4 runs on 8 hits (including 2 homers) in 7 innings.   Leake will need to stay away from Atlanta’s Dan Uggla if he doesn’t want to surrender any more long balls.  Uggla has 3 home runs and 5 RBIs against Leake.

David Hale is still looking for his first decision of any kind this season.  In his last start, he allowed 3 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.   Last season, Hale was 1 – 0 in his 2 starts with an ERA of 0.82.   In those 2 starts, Hale issued just 1 walk.  This season, he has allowed 9 walks.

In 2013, Hale didn’t face the Reds and he has yet to face anyone on the Cincinnati roster.  With help from the scouting report and the rest of the pitching staff, Hale should learn enough to handle the Reds.
