Thursday night, the Chicago White Sox and Scott Carroll will square off against the Toronto Blue Jays and J.A. Happ.  It will be Carroll’s 6th start and 12th appearance as Happ makes his 11th start and 14th appearance.

Scott Carroll didn’t get the decision in his last outing and that kept his record at 2 – 3 with a 4.30 ERA.  He didn’t last long in his previous start as he threw just 3.2 scoreless innings of work, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 2.  In just his 1st season in the Major Leagues, Carroll is trying to adjust to big league hitting and pressure of taking the mound as a starter.

Without any previous experience against the Blue Jays, Carroll will have to rely on the rest of the pitching staff for advice as well as the scouting report.

J.A. Happ lost his last start and that lowered his record to 6 -4 with a 4.87 ERA.  It was a rough outing for Happ as he was touched up for 8 runs on 7 hits (including a homer) in just 4 innings of work.  He struck out 5 but he also walked 4.  Happ seems to alternate wins with losses but he will need to find some consistency as the season continues. Last season, he managed to post a 5 – 7 record and a 4.56 ERA in 18 starts.

In 2013, Happ was 0 – 2 with a 6.75 ERA in 2 starts against the White Sox. Historically against the White Sox, Happ has allowed them to hit .283 with 13 hits, 3 home runs and 7 RBIs in 46 at-bats.
