Wednesday night, Andre Rienzo will take the mound for the Chicago White Sox as they face Drew Smyly and the Detroit Tigers.  It will be Rienzo’s first start of the season and Smyly’s second.

Andre Rienzo started the season with the White Sox’s Triple-A affiliate in Charlotte but was called up earlier in the week.  He pitched an inning of relief against the Astros on Sunday, April 20th and gave up a hit, a walk and struck out 1. It was about as much as you could expect from someone that just got called up.  In 2013, Rienzo started 10 games for the White Sox and compiled a 2 – 3 record with an ERA of 4.82.

One of his starts last season was against the Tigers but he failed to get the decision after giving up 2 runs on 4 hits in 6 innings. He has only faced 6 hitters on the Detroit roster and they are only batting .200 against the young right-hander from Brazil.

Drew Smyly comes into this one with a 1 - 1 record and a 4.00 ERA in 1 start and 2 relief appearances this season.  He took the loss in his previous start after going just 3 innings and surrendering 4 runs on 6 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.  Last season, Smyly made 63 relief appearances with 6 wins, no losses, 2 saves and a 2.37 ERA. 

In 2013, Smyly appeared in 6 games against the White Sox without getting a decision.  He allowed just 1 run on 4 hits in 4.1 innings.  Chicago’s Paul Konerko is 5 of 7 with a homer and a RBI against Smyly.
