Wednesday afternoon, the Chicago White Sox will give the ball to Chris Sale (12 – 4, 2.20 ERA) as they square off against the Detroit Tigers and Justin Verlander (14 -12, 4.68 ERA).  It will be the 26th start for Sale and the 32nd for Verlander.

Chris Sale had a rough go of it in his last outing and his performance led to a loss.  In 5 innings of work, Sale gave up 5 runs and 9 hits (including 2 homers).  He walked 2 and struck out 6.  Sale had been pitching well before the wheels fell off in this start.  He hadn’t lost a game since mid-August and had surrendered just 4 runs in his 3 previous starts.  But tough luck has led to his 3 -3 record in his last 10 starts.  Last season, Sale went 11 -14 with a 3.07 ERA in 30 starts.

Justin Verlander dominated the opposition in his last start en route to another victory.  Verlander surrendered a run on 7 hits through 7.1 innings of work as he struck out 4 without issuing a single walk.  Verlander has been up and down in recent weeks but his last start was one of his better efforts.  In his last 10 outings, Verlander is 5 – 4.  In 2013, Verlander made 34 starts and finished the year with a 13 - 12 record and a 3.46 ERA.

Last season, Verlander was 0 - 2 with a 5.54 ERA in 2 starts against the White Sox.  Verlander has fared a little better this season against Chicago with a 2 -1 record in 4 starts.
