Chicago Cubs - Wood, T (6-5) vs. Philadelphia Phillies - Burnett, A (4-5)

Sunday afternoon, Travis Wood takes the hill for the Chicago Cubs as they square off against the Philadelphia Phillies and A.J. Burnett.  Wood makes his 14th start as Burnett makes his 15th. 

Travis Wood picked up the win his last time out and that took his record to 6 – 5 with a 4.95 ERA.  In that outing, Wood allowed 3 runs on 9 hits (including a home run) in 6.2 innings of work. He walked while striking out 2. Wood has been up and down this year but he should be able to hold on and post better results than last season when he went 9 - 12 with a 3.11 ERA in 32 starts. 

In 2013, Wood didn’t factor into the decision in his only start against the Phillies as he allowed 2 runs on 6 hits (including a homer) in 6.1 innings.  This season, Wood opened the year with a loss to Philadelphia after giving up 4 runs and 6 hits (including a homer) in 6.1 innings.

A.J. Burnett added a win to his stats in his last outing and that boosted his record to 4 – 5 with a 4.24 ERA.  Burnett pitched 7.1 innings the last time out and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits (including a home run) as he walked 2 and struck out 3.  Burnett has been hit or miss this year and will probably match his results from last season when he posted a 10 – 11 record and 3.30 ERA in 30 starts for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In 2013, Burnett was 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA in 3 starts against the Cubs.  This season, he lost his only start against Chicago after surrendering 8 runs on 5 hits in 5.2 innings as he walked 5 and struck out 3.
