Wednesday afternoon, the Chicago Cubs will take the field behind Jake Arrieta as they square off against the Miami Marlins and Nathan Eovaldi.  Arrieta makes his 9th start as Eovaldi makes his 15th.

Jake Arrieta boosted his record to 2 – 1 with a 2.09 ERA after getting the win his last time out.  In that outing, Arrieta pitched 7 shutout innings and allowed just 2 hits and a walk while striking out 9. It was the 2nd straight start that Arrieta didn’t allow any runs in and he has allowed just a run in his last 3 starts.  If he keeps pitching the way that he has been as of late, he should have no trouble posting better numbers than last season, when he went 5 -  4 with a 4.78 ERA in 14 starts for the Cubs and the Baltimore Orioles.

In 2013, Arrieta didn’t face the Marlins but he does have a start against them this season. Less than 2 weeks ago, Arrieta held the Marlins coreless in 6 innings as he allowed just 3 hits while striking out 7 in a no-decision.

Nathan Eovaldi pitched to his 3rd straight no-decision in his last start and that held his record at 4 – 2 with a 3.71 ERA. In that outing, Eovaldi was torched for 6 runs on 10 hits (including a homer) in 4.2 innings of work.  He walked a batter while striking out 3.  He’ll come into this start after missing a few days on paternity leave. Last season, Eovaldi went 4 – 6 with a 3.39 ERA in 18 starts.  

In 2013, Eovaldi didn’t face the Cubs but he just pitched against them less than 2 weeks ago.  In that start, he didn’t factor in the decision after allowing 3 runs on 6 hits in 7.2 innings as he walked 1 and struck out 8.
