Veteran starter Jake Peavy and the Boston Red Sox will face off against left-hander Scott Kazmir and the Oakland Athletics on Thursday night.

Right-hander Jake Peavy ended up with a no decision against the Cleveland Indians on Saturday, but he certainly pitched well enough to get the win. In six innings of work in that outing, Peavy allowed just one run on seven hits while walking two and striking out five. He is just 1-4 this season so far with a 4.53 ERA and he is giving up more hits per nine innings (9.6) than he has since way back in his rookie season.

Alberto Callaspo has faced Peavy more than any of the other A's and he is 6-for-23 against him with two doubles and five RBI. John Jaso has just one hit against the right-hander in eight at-bats.

Over the weekend, Scott Kazmir won his second consecutive start by defeating the New York Yankees in Oakland. He pitched six innings in that start and gave up just one unearned run on three hits while walking three and striking out two. Kazmir has had a very good season so far this year, but he has also benefited from 6.09 runs per nine innings from his offense, which is one of the highest rates for a starter in the big leagues.

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has a .514 batting average against Kazmir through 35 at-bats with five doubles, a triple and a home run.
