Friday night, the Boston Red Sox will take the field behind Brandon Workman as they face the New York Yankees and Vidal Nuno.  Workman will be making his 6th start and 9th appearance as Nuno makes his 13th start and 16th appearance.

Brandon Workman pitched to a no-decision his last time out and that held his record at 1 – 0 with a 2.88 ERA.  In that start, Workman threw 6 innings and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits (including a home run). He walked 2 while striking out 7.  It took Workman 103 pitches to get through 6 innings and that isn’t a good sign for the rest of the season. Last season, Workman was 6 – 3 with a 4.97 ERA in 3 starts and 17 relief appearances during his rookie campaign.

In 2013, Workman was 2 - 1 with a 5.40 ERA in 4 relief appearances against the Yankees.  Workman has held the 7 Yankees that he has faced to a .176 average with 3 hits, a homer and an RBI in 17 at-bats.

Vidal Nuno dropped his 2nd straight start and that took his record to 1 – 4 with a 5.88 ERA.  In the loss, Nuno gave up 5 runs and 6 hits (including 3 home runs) in 6.1 innings of work.  Nuno hasn’t won a game since early May and he is really struggling in each start. Last season, he went 1 - 2 with a 2.25 ERA in 3 starts and 2 relief appearances.

In 2013, Nuno didn’t get to face the Red Sox in his rookie season, so he will have to rely heavily on the scouting report to attempt to find a way past Boston.
