Friday night, the Boston Red Sox will send Rubby De La Rosa to the mound as they take on the Detroit Tigers and Drew Smyly.  De La Rosa will make just his 2nd start as Smyly makes his 9th start and 12th appearance.

Rubby De La Rosa took his record to 1 – 0 after winning his first start thanks to 7 shutout innings of baseball.  He allowed just 4 hits and didn’t walk a single batter as he struck out 8. With Clay Buchholz expected to miss a few more starts, De La Rosa should get a few more starts.  Last season, De La Rosa worked primarily out of the bullpen as he posted a 0 - 2 record with a 5.56 ERA in 11 relief appearances.     

In 2013, De La Rosa pitched just one inning against the Tigers and allowed just a hit. Only 3 Tigers have faced him and Bryan Holaday is the one batter that owns a hit against De La Rosa.

Drew Smyly dropped his second straight start his last time out and that lowered his record to 2 - 4 with a 4.10 ERA.  In that outing, Smyly gave up 3 runs on 7 hits in 4 innings of work as he walked 1 and struck out 5.  For the second straight start, Smyly threw over 105 pitches in 5 or less innings and that isn’t a recipe for success.  Last season, Smyly went 6 – 0 with 2 saves and a 2.37 ERA in 63 relief appearances.

In 2013, Smyly was 1 – 0 in 2 relief appearances against the Red Sox.  He pitched 4.2 innings and allowed just 4 hits, without a run or a walk, while striking out 4.  Smyly hasn’t faced the Boston lineup that many times and he has allowed a collective .281 average with 9 hits, 2 homers and 4 RBIs in 32 at-bats.
