Wednesday afternoon, Brandon Workman (1 – 6, 4.45 ERA) and the Boston Red Sox will take on Homer Bailey (9 -5, 3.71 ERA) and the Cincinnati Reds.   Workman makes his 11th start and 15th appearance as Bailey makes his 24th start.

Brandon Workman took a hard luck loss just a few days ago after giving up a solo homer in a relief appearance.  Workman faced just 1 batter but the 6 pitches he threw led to his 6th straight loss.  With the exception of his last loss, Workman has surrendered 4 or more runs in each of his 5 other losses.  He hasn’t had a victory since early June.  Last season, Workman went 6 – 3 with a 4.97 ERA in 3 starts and 17 relief appearances.

In 2013, Workman didn’t face the Reds and he has only seen 2 of their hitters before. Jake Elmore and Ramon Santiago are each 1 for 1 against Workman.

Homer Bailey picked up his first victory in over a month after getting the win in his last start.  In that outing, Bailey threw 7 innings of shutout ball while allowing just 4 hits and a walk as he struck out 8 batters.  Bailey had surrendered just 2 runs in his previous 2 starts but didn’t get the decision in either start due to poor run support.  In 2013, Bailey was 11 – 12 with a 3.49 ERA in 32 starts.

Last season, Bailey didn’t face the Red Sox but he has a start against them this season. In that outing, Bailey didn’t get the decision after allowing 3 runs and 5 hits in 6 innings.
