Tuesday night, the Boston Red Sox will give the ball to Joe Kelly (0 - 0, 1.29 ERA) as they take on the Cincinnati Reds and Mat Latos (4 – 3, 3.12 ERA).  Kelly makes his 9th start as Latos makes his 11th.

Joe Kelly pitched a solid game in his last start but still didn’t factor into the decision.  In his 1st start for Boston, Kelly took on his former team, the St. Louis Cardinals.  Kelly held his former teammates to a run and 3 hits in 7 innings as he walked 4 and struck out 2.  Kelly’s 2 victories came when he held the opposition to a run and 6 or fewer hits.  In 2013, Kelly posted a record of 10 – 5 with a 2.69 ERA in 15 starts and 22 relief appearances for the Cardinals.

Last season, Kelly won his only outing against the Reds after holding them to a run (on a solo homer) and 8 hits in 6 innings.   Cincinnati is batting .226 against Kelly with 7 hits and an RBI in 31 at-bats.

Mat Latos got his 2nd straight victory in his last start after 7.2 strong innings of work.  He gave up 3 runs and 6 hits (including a home run) as he walked 2 batters and struck out 5.  Latos is still issuing too many walks and has issued 10 in his last 3 starts.    Last season, Latos was 14 – 7 with a 3.16 ERA in 32 starts.

Latos didn’t pitch against the Red Sox last season but he has seen many of their hitters in the past.  Boston is batting just .190 against Latos with 11 hits, 2 homers and 7 RBIs in 58 at-bats.
