Sunday afternoon, the Boston Red Sox will send Joe Kelly (4 -4, 4.28 ERA) to the hill to face the Baltimore Orioles and Miguel Gonzalez (9 – 8, 3.28 ERA).  Kelly makes his 16th start as Gonzalez makes his 25th start and 26th appearance.

Joe Kelly wasn’t great his last time out but he managed to come away with the victory.  In 6 innings of work, Kelly gave up 4 runs and 5 hits (including a home run) while walking 2 and striking out 3.  It was just his 2nd win in 8 starts for the Red Sox after coming over from the St. Louis Cardinals.  Overall, he is just 2 -3 in his last 10 starts.  In 2013, Kelly started 15 games and made 22 relief appearances on the way to a 10 – 5 record and a 2.69 ERA. 

Kelly didn’t face the Orioles in 2013 but he just faced them less than 2 weeks ago.  He took the loss in that start after allowing 4 runs and 6 hits in 6.1 innings.

Miguel Gonzalez saw his 3 game win streak end with a loss in his last start.  In defeat, he surrendered just 3 runs and 3 hits (including a home run) while walking 3 and striking out just 1 batter.  Despite the loss, Gonzalez has been solid in recent weeks and has allowed 3 or more runs in just 2 of his last 10 outings.  He is 5 - 3 in those 10 appearances.  Last season, Gonzalez posted a record of 11 – 8 with a 3.78 ERA in 28 starts and 2 relief appearances.

In 2013, Gonzalez was 1 – 0 with a 4.05 ERA in a start and a relief appearance against the Red Sox.  He is 1 -0 in 2 starts against Boston this season.
