Tuesday night, the Boston Red Sox will take the field behind Jon Lester as they square off against the Atlanta Braves and Aaron Harang. Both pitchers will be making their 11th starts of the season.

Jon Lester’s record fell to 4 – 6 and his ERA rose to 3.36 after taking his second straight loss in his last start.  Lester took a beating in 6.1 innings of work as he surrendered 7 runs on 10 hits (including 2 homers) while walking 2 and striking out 3.   This season has been up and down for Lester and it will be tough for him to match 2013 when he went 15 – 8 with an ERA of 3.75 in 33 starts.

Last season, Lester didn’t face the Braves but he has seen some of their hitters before.  Atlanta’s B.J. Upton is 11 of 55 with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs against Lester.

Aaron Harang pitched to a no-decision in his last start and that left his record at 4 – 4 with an ERA of 3.32.  In his last outing, Harang allowed 4 runs on 9 hits in 5.1 innings of work.  He walked 1 batter while striking out 5.   Harang seems to be doing much better than last season when he went 5 – 12 with an ERA of 5.40 in 26 starts for the New York Mets and the Seattle Mariners.  

In 2013, Harang was lit up for 7 runs on 8 hits (including a home run) in 5 innings of work in his only start against the Red Sox.   As a whole, the Red Sox are batting .311 against Harang with 38 hits, 4 homers and 17 RBIs in 122 at-bats.
