Wednesday night, Chris Tillman will take the hill for the Baltimore Orioles as they face Dustin McGowan and the Toronto Blue Jays.  Tillman will make his 5th start of the season as McGowan makes his 4th.

Chris Tillman picked up his 2nd win of the season after going 5 innings and surrendering 3 runs on 7 hits with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts his last time out. Although Tillman is 2 – 1 with an ERA of 1.71, he has thrown a lot of pitches in just 4 starts.  So far, he is averaging 110.8 pitches per start and that is higher than last season’s 105.4 average when he was 16 – 7 with a 3.71 ERA in 33 starts.  Tillman is still young but he can’t keep throwing that many pitches.

In 2013, Tillman was 2 – 1 with a 3.31 ERA in 5 starts against the Blue Jays.  He should pitch around Toronto’s Colby Rasmus.  Rasmus is a career .353 hitter with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs against Tillman.

Dustin McGowan failed to get a decision in his last outing after going just 4 innings and giving up 3 runs on 6 hits (including a homer) with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts.  Going into this game, McGowan is 1 – 1 with a 4.85 ERA.  Last season, McGowan made 25 relief appearances for the Blue Jays without a decision and a 2.45 ERA.

In 2013, McGowan pitched in 4 games against the Orioles with a 6.75 ERA.  He has generally good numbers against the lineup and there really isn’t anyone that he shouldn’t be able to handle.
