Thursday evening, the Baltimore Orioles will take the field behind Ubaldo Jimenez as they face the Tampa Bay Rays and David Price.  It will be Jimenez’s 7th start and Price’s 8th.

Ubaldo Jimenez got his first win of the season after turning in his best outing of the year.  In 7.1 innings, Jimenez pitched scoreless ball and allowed just 3 hits and a walk as he struck out 10.  But despite the great performance, Jimenez still has just a 1 – 4 record and an ERA of 5.19.   Last season, Jimenez was 13 – 9 with a 3.30 ERA in 32 starts with the Cleveland Indians. 

In 2013, Jimenez won his only start against the Rays after pitching 8 scoreless innings and allowing only 4 hits and a walk while striking out 7.   Jimenez might want to pitch around Tampa Bay’s Yunel Escobar.  Escobar is 7 of 19 with a homer and 2 RBIs against Jimenez. 

David Price pitched to a no decision in his last start despite pitching 7 innings and surrendering just 2 runs on 8 hits (including a home run) without issuing a walk and striking out 8.  The lack of a decision left his record at 3 – 2 with an ERA of 4.44.  Last season, Price went 10 – 8 with an ERA of 3.33 in 27 starts.

In 2013, Price was 1 – 0 with a 4.50 ERA in 4 starts against the Orioles.  He gave up 11 runs in 22 innings against Baltimore, which was the most against any team.   Baltimore’s Nelson Cruz has hit Price well, with a .375 average, 2 homers and 4 RBIs in 16 at-bats.
