Tuesday night, the Baltimore Orioles will give the ball to Miguel Gonzalez as they square off against the Pittsburgh Pirates and Francisco Liriano.  It will be Gonzalez’s 8th start and 9th appearance this season as Liriano makes his 10th start. 

Miguel Gonzalez comes into this one with a 1 – 3 record and a 4.76 ERA after two appearances in less than a week’s time.  After making a 7 inning start and allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, Gonzalez pitched 2 innings of relief 4 days later.  In that appearance, he allowed 2 runs on 2 hits (including a homer).  Last season, Gonzalez was 11 – 8 with a 3.78 ERA in 28 starts and 2 relief appearances.

In 2013, Gonzalez didn’t face the pirates and in his career, he has only seen 2 of the Pittsburgh hitters.  Chris Stewart is 1 of 6 and Russell Martin is 1 of 3 against the right-hander. 

Francisco Liriano pitched to a 5th straight no decision in his last start and that left his record at 0 – 3 with a 4.25 ERA.  Liriano was solid in his last start and gave up just a run on 4 hits with a walk and 7 strikeouts.  As he is still chasing his first win of the season, Liriano might not be able to match last year’s results when he went 16 – 8 with a 3.02 ERA in 26 starts.

In 2013, Liriano didn’t face the Orioles but he has experience against the lineup.  Baltimore’s Adam Jones is batting .267 with 3 homers and 4 RBIs against Liriano.
