Sunday afternoon, the Baltimore Orioles and Chris Tillman will face the New York Yankees and Masahiro Tanaka.  Tillman makes his 16th start as Tanaka makes his 15th.

Chris Tillman dropped his 2nd straight game his last time out and that lowered his record to 5 – 4 with a 4.82 ERA.  In that start, Tillman gave up 3 runs on 8 hits in 7 innings of work without a walk or a strikeout.  Tillman’s control has been nonexistent in his last few starts as walks have increased and strikeouts have decreased.  He would have to make a complete turnaround to have a chance of matching last season when he went 16 – 7 with a 3.71 ERA in 33 starts.

In 2013, Tillman was 2 - 1 with a 4.42 ERA in 3 starts against the New York Yankees. With the way that Tillman has been pitching, he should stay away from Brett Gardner. Gardner is batting .267 with 4 RBIs and 3 walks against the right-hander. 

Masahiro Tanaka won his 5th straight game in his last outing to take his record to a MLB best 11- 1 with a 1.99 ERA.  In that start, Tanaka went 6 innings and gave up just a run (on a solo homer) and 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 10.  Tanaka has clearly been the best pitcher of the season and we are not even at the halfway point of the season yet.  He’s averaging 10.20 strikeouts per 9 innings while holding batters to a .216 batting average.

In his only start against the Orioles, Tanaka pitched to a no-decision after allowing 3 runs on 7 hits (including a homer) in 7 innings of work.  He walked a batter while striking out 10.
