Comerica Park will be host to the Sunday afternoon game between the Detroit Tigers and the Baltimore Orioles. The Tigers home crowd will be excited to see their staff ace Justin Verlander take the mound for them, while the Orioles will send Chris Tillman to the hill.

Verlander allowed two earned runs on six hits in six innings in his season debut. He didn’t register a decision and recorded just two strikeouts. It may be only one start, but the 3.0 strikeouts per nine innings he is currently averaging this season is down from his 8.47 career mark. He won just 13 games last year after earning at least 17 in the previous four seasons. In his career against current Orioles, Verlander has allowed just 43 hits in 228 at bats (.189). Shortstop J.J. Hardy has had the most success, batting .258 (8-for-31) with 3 home runs and 7 RBIs. Nick Markakis has recorded the most hits against Verlander (10), but is hitting just .244 against him.

Tillman had a breakout season a year ago going 16-7 with a 3.71 ERA. In 2012, in limited play, he was also very successful going 9-3 with a 2.93 ERA. His solid play over the course of his young career should give Baltimore fans hope this season. He won his first start of the season and will look to shut down the big Detroit bats of Miguel Cabrera, Alex Avila, Victor Martinez and Ian Kinsler.
