Monday night, the Baltimore Orioles will give the ball to Miguel Gonzalez (8 – 7, 3.38 ERA) as they face the Boston Red Sox and Joe Kelly (3 – 3, 4.13 ERA).  Gonzalez makes his 23rd start and 24th appearance as Kelly makes his 14th start. 

Miguel Gonzalez went the distance in his last outing for his 2nd straight victory.  In his first complete game shutout, Gonzalez held his opposition to just 4 hits and a walk while striking out 8.  In his last 2 starts, Gonzalez has only allowed a run and 8 hits in 16 innings of work.  Despite a stint on the disabled list and a trip back to the Minor Leagues, Gonzalez is still 4 – 2 in his last 10 appearances.  Last season, Gonzalez made 28 starts and 2 relief appearances as he compiled a record of 11 – 8 with a 3.78 ERA.

In 2013, Gonzalez was 1 – 0 with a 4.05 ERA in a start and a relief appearance against the Red Sox.  Earlier this season, he pitched to a no-decision against Boston despite holding them to 2 runs and 7 hits (including a homer) through 8 innings.

Joe Kelly got his first win as a member of the Red Sox in his last start.  He allowed 3 runs and 5 hits (including a homer) in 6.2 innings.  Kelly struck out 6 but he also walked 4.  It wasn’t a brilliant performance but it earned Kelly the “W”.   The win gave Kelly a 2 -2 record in his last 10 appearances.  Last season with the St. Louis Cardinals, Kelly went 10 – 5 with a 2.69 ERA in 15 starts and 22 appearances. 

Kelly didn’t pitch against the Orioles in 2013 and he has only seen 4 of the Baltimore hitters before.  Only Nelson Cruz has a hit off of Kelly and Cruz is just 1 for 3.
