Thursday night, the Atlanta Braves will give the ball to Gavin Floyd as they square off against the Washington Nationals and Jordan Zimmerman. It will be Floyd’s 9th start and Zimmerman’s 15th. 

Gavin Floyd saw his record stay at 1- 2 and his ERA rise slightly to 2.98 as he pitched to a no-decision in his last start. In that outing, Floyd allowed 4 runs on 7 hits (including 2 home runs) in 6.1 innings.  It was the 3rd straight start that Floyd allowed the long ball and he has allowed 6 this season compared to just 4 in 2013.  In 2013, Floyd went 0 - 4 with an ERA of 5.18 in 5 starts for the Chicago White Sox.

Last season, Floyd lost his only start against the Nationals after giving up 5 runs on 9 hits (including a home run) in 5.1 innings. Floyd will have to watch out for Denard Span. Span is batting .447 with 4 homers against the veteran right-hander.

Jordan Zimmerman took the loss in his last start and that lowered his record to 5 – 3 with an ERA of 2.98.  In that outing, Zimmerman gave up just a run (on a solo homer) and 3 hits with a walk and 5 strikeouts in 8 innings of work.  But his offense couldn’t even score a run and that gave Zimmerman the loss.  But Zimmerman still has the chance to equal his results from 2013 when he went 19 – 9 with a 3.25 ERA in 32 starts.

Last season, Zimmerman was 1 – 0 with a 1.50 ERA in 2 starts against the Braves.  This season, Zimmerman opened the year with a no-decision against Atlanta after giving up a run (on a solo homer) and 4 hits in 5 innings with a walk and 9 strikeouts.
