Atlanta Braves - Santana (5-5, 4.15 ERA vs. Philadelphia Phillies - Hernandez (3-6, 4.41 ERA)

Saturday afternoon, Ervin Santana takes the mound for the Atlanta Braves as they take on Roberto Hernandez and the Philadelphia Phillies.  Santana makes his 15th start as Hernandez makes his 15th start and 18th appearance.

Ervin Santana lost his 3rd straight game in his last start and that dropped his record to 5 – 5 with a 4.15 ERA.  In the loss, Santana gave up 3 runs and 6 hits in 6 innings as he walked a batter and struck out 9.  The last 2 starts haven’t been as bad but Santana hasn’t had much support from his offense. With a few runs behind him, he should be able to match or better 2013 when he went 9 – 10 with a 3.24 ERA in 32 starts for the Kansas City Royals.

Last season, Santana didn’t face the Phillies but he has 2 starts against them this season. In his first start he pitched to a no-decision.  In his 2nd start (less than 2 weeks ago) he took the loss after allowing 4 runs on 8 hits (including a homer) in 6 innings of work.

Roberto Hernandez lost his last outing and that lowered his record to 3 - 6 with a 4.41 ERA.  Hernandez threw 6 innings in the loss and gave up 2 runs and 3 hits while walking 3 and striking out 6.  Hernandez has been shaky at best in his last few starts and he seem headed for another season like 2013 when he went 6 – 13 with a save and a 4.89 ERA in 24 starts and 8 relief appearances for the Kansas City Royals.

Last season, Hernandez didn’t face the Braves but he has 2 starts against Atlanta this season.  His first start resulted in a no-decision and he 2nd was a loss after he allowed 5 runs and 8 hits (including 2 homers) in 6 innings of work.
