Wednesday night, Trevor Cahill (3 - 8, 4.68) takes the mound for the Arizona Diamondbacks as they face Tanner Roark (12 – 7, 2.93 ERA) and the Washington Nationals.  Cahill makes his 11th start and 26th appearance as Roark makes his 25th start. 

Trevor Cahill picked up his 2nd straight victory in his last outing.  He gave up 2 runs and 6 hits in 6.2 innings as he walked 3 and struck out 3.  Cahill’s last few starts have been much better that what he displayed earlier in the season before getting sent to the bullpen and back to the Minors.  He is 2 - 2 in 5 outings since returning to the Diamondbacks.   In 2013, Cahill compiled a record of 8 – 10 with an ERA of 3.99 in 25 starts and 1 relief appearance.

Last season, Cahill was roughed up in his only start against the Nationals.  He allowed 6 runs and 8 hits (including a homer) in 5 innings as he took the loss.  Washington is batting .288 against Cahill with 21 hits, 2 homers and 13 RBIs in 73 at-bats.

Tanner Roark struggled in his last start but he managed to come away with the win.  In 5.2 innings of work, Roark allowed 3 runs and 5 hits (including a home run) as he walked 2 and struck out 4.  It took him 107 pitches to get through the start.  Roark has been solid in his last 10 outings though as he is 6 – 3 in that span of time. Last season, Roark went 7 – 1 with a 1.51 ERA in 5 starts and 9 relief appearances during his rookie campaign.

In 2013, Roark didn’t get the decision in his only start against the Diamondbacks despite allowing just a run on 3 hits in 7 innings.  The 4 current Diamondbacks that have faced Roark before (Paul Goldschmidt, Tuffy Gosewisch, Aaron Hill and A.J. Pollock) are hitless against Roark.
