Tuesday night, the Arizona Diamondbacks will take the field behind Wade Miley as they square off against the Pittsburgh Pirates and Jeff Locke.  Miley makes his 18th start as Locke makes his 6th.

Wade Miley pitched his 4th straight no-decision in his last outing and that left his record at 3- 6 with a 4.78 ERA.  In that last start, Miley went just 4 innings and allowed 5 runs and 8 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3.  It wasn’t Miley’s worst outing of the season but it was his shortest.  At this point, matching last season’s record of 10 – 10 with an ERA of 3.55 in 33 starts seems almost impossible unless he can find a way to turn it around.

Last season, Miley was 1 – 0 with a 2.45 ERA in 2 starts against the Pirates.  In his career, Miley has pitched well against the Pirates, holding them to a .217 average with 15 hits and 6 RBIs in 69 at-bats.

Jeff Locke got his first victory of the season the last time out and he brings a 1 – 1 record and an ERA of 3.74 into this start.  In the win, Locke surrendered 3 runs on 8 hits (including a homer) in 7.1 innings. He walked 2 while striking out 4.  If Locke can string together some more quality outings he has a chance to equal or better his numbers from 2013 when he went 10 – 7 with a 3.52 ERA in 30 starts.

Last season, Locke was lit up in his only start against the Diamondbacks.  He took the loss after giving up 8 runs and 10 hits (including a home run) in just 2.2 innings of work. Only 6 Pirates have faced him before and he might want to watch out for Martin Prado.  Prado is 1 for 4 against Locke but he has a homer and 3 RBIs.
