Sunday afternoon, the Arizona Diamondbacks will take the field behind Bronson Arroyo as they face the New York Mets and Rafael Montero. Arroyo will be making his 10th start as Montero makes his 3rd. 

Bronson Arroyo wasn’t that bad in his last start but the result was a loss that dropped his record to 4 – 3 with a 4.45 ERA.  In 7 innings of work, Arroyo gave up 5 runs on 9 hits (including 2 home runs) without issuing a walk while striking out 6.  He only threw 88 pitches in the start but the 2 long balls didn’t help his cause.  Last season, Arroyo was 14 – 12 with a 3.79 ERA in 32 starts for the Cincinnati Reds.

In 2013, Arroyo didn’t face the Mets but he has faced them once this season and it wasn’t pretty.  Arroyo was lit up for 9 runs on 10 hits (including a homer) in just 3.1 innings of work.

Rafael Montero dropped his 2nd straight outing and he comes into this start with a 0 - 2 record and an ERA of 6.97.  Montero allowed 5 runs on 7 hits (including a home run) in just 4.1 innings of work. He walked 4 while striking out 4.  When he was called up from the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas earlier this month, he was expected to impress.  But it hasn’t turned out that way.  Montero just isn’t looking like the pitcher that went 4 – 1 with an ERA of 3.67 in 8 starts in the minors this season.  And if he doesn’t improve quickly, he’ll be back in the minors soon.

Without any experience against the Diamondbacks, Montero will need to settle down and concentrate on his pitches if he wants to get that first major league win.
