Saturday night the Arizona Diamondbacks will give Brandon McCarthy the start against Jorge De La Rosa of the Colorado Rockies.  Both pitchers will be making their second starts of the young season. Arizona is the latest stop for Brandon McCarthy in his 9th major league season.  Now in his 2nd season with the Diamondbacks,  McCarthy gave the D-Backs 22 starts last year with a win-loss record of 5 – 11 and an ERA of 4.53.   Injuries have been a reason why McCarthy has been with four teams in 9 years and injuries will definitely be a concern this season as well.  In his last two seasons, he has posted basically the same numbers in strikeouts (76 in 2013 vs. 73 in 2012) and walks (21 in 2013 vs. 24 in 2012).  But his ERA in 2012 was only 3.24 compared to last year’s 4.53. 

McCarthy has seen the Rockies before but he will need to pay close attention to Michael Cuddyer, Justin Morneau and Jordan Pacheco.  Cuddyer and Morneau have more at-bats but Pacheco has been very successful with 5 hits and an RBI in just 7 at-bats. 

Jorge De La Rosa enters his 11th MLB season after a solid campaign in 2013 where he went 16 – 6 in 30 starts with an ERA of 3.49.  But with those 30 starts, De La Rosa pitched over 167 innings which was the second most of his career.  His strikeout to walk ratio (112 strikeouts to 62 walks) wasn't very good and will need to be improved upon this season . 

Many of the Diamondbacks have faced De La Rosa before but none more than Cody Ross with 32 at-bats.  Ross has 11 hits and 5 RBIs in those plate appearances.
