Tuesday night, Brandon McCarthy will take the hill for the Arizona Diamondbacks as they face Jason Hammel and the Chicago Cubs.  McCarthy will make his 5th start of the season as Hammel makes his 4th.

Brandon McCarthy got his third straight loss of the season in his last start. McCarthy surrendered 3 runs on 7 hits (including a homer) in just 5.2 innings. He walked 3 while striking out 5 as he threw 104 pitches.  With the loss, McCarthy’s record fell to 0 – 3 with a 7.11 ERA.  Last season, McCarthy went 5 – 11 with an ERA of 4.53 in 22 starts. 

In 2013, McCarthy didn’t face the Cubs and he has experience against just 3 players on the Chicago roster.  The Cubs’ Ryan Sweeney is the only one with a hit and he is 3 of 12 with a double and a RBI against McCarthy.

Jason Hammel took his first loss of the season in his last outing.  In that start, Hammel went 7 innings and gave up 3 runs on 5 hits (including a home run) while walking 3 and striking out 5.  The loss gave Hammel a 2- 1 record and an ERA of 3.05.  In 2013, Hammel was 7 – 8 and had a save with an ERA of 4.97 in 23 starts and 3 relief appearances with the Baltimore Orioles.  

Last season, Hammel didn’t face the Diamondbacks but he has seen many of the hitters on the Arizona roster.  He will need to pitch around Arizona’s Miguel Montero.  Although Montero is only batting .167 against Hammel, he has a home run and 7 RBIs against the right-hander.
