Yale at Harvard Picks and College Basketball Odds
by Alan Matthews - 2/1/2013
You have to love the Ivy League. It's clearly the only Division I basketball conference that truly puts academics ahead of athletics. For one, there are no athletic scholarships available to Ivy League schools. Instead, they give top athletes a lot of financial aid. Most Ivy League schools double the size of grants meant for middle-income families. Also, the Ivy League only plays its conference games on Fridays and Saturdays - thus no disruption of classes. And finally, the Ivy is the only D-I conference without a postseason tournament. The regular-season champ gets the NCAA Tournament bid. Read More >>
Cavaliers at Pistons Picks and NBA Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 2/1/2013
Years from now, chances are very good that this won't be a game that people will look back on fondly. People will not tell their grandchildren where they were on the day the Cavs traveled to Detroit. Heck, by next week most of the people at the game will likely have forgotten they were ever there. This is a dud of a game - the ultimate in midseason doldrums. Read More >>
Grizzlies at Thunder Picks and NBA Betting Odds
by Alan Matthews - 1/31/2013
I really don't understand what Memphis Grizzlies ownership is doing by trading Rudy Gay to the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday. Of course, no team wants to pay what is going to be a very punitive luxury tax by going over the salary cap under the NBA's new collective bargaining agreement. But the Grizzlies, who are as cash-strapped as any team in the league (reportedly lost $12.5 million last year), already got under the cap with their recent salary dump trade of reserves Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington (those two were in the rotation) and Josh Selby along with a future first-round pick to Cleveland. Avalanche at Flames Picks and NHL Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 1/31/2013
This is supposed to be a hectic, compact season thanks to the lockout, but the Flames apparently didn't get the memo. They beat Edmonton on Saturday night to earn their first win, and they have been off since. For bettors, the trick here is to determine whether that will be a positive - a second training camp of sorts to iron out the kinks and play some better hockey than they have - or a negative early on. Colorado will be comparatively exhausted heading into this one. This is the fourth game of a road trip that saw them in San Jose Saturday, Edmonton Monday, and Vancouver Wednesday. There isn't an easy game in that group, so there could be some bumps and bruises - physical and mental - heading into this one. Read More >>
Arizona at Washington Picks and College Basketball Betting Odds
by Dave Schwab - 1/31/2013
The Arizona Wildcats and the Washington Huskies clash this Thursday night at the Alaska Airlines Arena with just one game separating the two teams in the current Pac-12 standings. The game is slated to tip off at 9 p.m. (ET), and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN. Read More >>
Northwestern at Michigan Picks and College Basketball Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 1/30/2013
If this game plays out at all like it should it won't be close. Let's get that out there to begin with. So why is a game like this worth discussing? Well, the Michigan Wolverines will be debuting their shiny No. 1 ranking in the AP Poll. The last time they were looking down on the rest of basketball world was during the 1992-93 season - the "Fab Five" era - and most of the stars of this current team weren't even born yet. It has been a seemingly endless wait for the return to glory, but Michigan fans now feel it. Now it remains to be seen if the team can handle their lofty ranking with the same calm determination they have handled the rest of this season with the exception of the first half of their lone loss at Ohio State. by Dave Schwab - 1/30/2013
The Miami Heat head to the Barclays Center this Wednesday night to square off against the Brooklyn Nets in the second game of their current four-game road trip. This Eastern Conference showdown is slated to tip off at 8 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN. Read More >>
Oilers at Coyotes Picks and NHL Betting Odds
by Alan Matthews - 1/30/2013
Last season, the Phoenix Coyotes were one of the NHL's biggest surprises. They weren't expected to do much - if even stay in Phoenix - but won the Pacific Division and upset the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round of the playoffs and then the Nashville Predators in the conference semifinals before running into to the red-hot L.A. Kings in the West Finals. Phoenix did it with a starless team and without much of a budget with the franchise in such tradition. That appears to be catching up to the Coyotes this season as they are off to a 2-4 start and really don't resemble a playoff team. Read More >>
Hornets at Lakers Picks and NBA Betting Odds
by Alan Matthews - 1/29/2013
Kobe Bryant, point guard extraordinaire? Even though the Los Angeles Lakers have a two-time MVP and future Hall of Fame point guard in Steve Nash, it has been Bryant essentially running the show from the point in L.A.'s past two games, both wins. Read More >>
Ducks at Sharks Picks and NHL Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 1/29/2013
This is a battle of two teams in a good place early in this young season. The Ducks have won three of four, and they opened their season with two road wins. They take their unblemished road mark into San Jose to face a team that has yet to lose in five games. Not only is San Jose 5-0, but they have won all five games by at least two goals and four of the five by three or more. And they have done it against a reasonably competitive schedule. They have been the class of the NHL very early in this season. Read More >>
Georgia Tech at Clemson Picks and NCAA Hoops Betting Odds
by Dave Schwab - 1/29/2013
Georgia Tech will be in search of just its second win the ACC this season when it makes the trip north to Littlejohn Coliseum this Tuesday night to face the Clemson Tigers. This game is set to tip off at 7 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast on ESPN3. Read More >>
Rockets at Jazz Picks and NBA Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 1/28/2013
After having each won a home game earlier in the season, the Jazz and the Rockets take the floor in Salt Lake for the third meeting of what has been a strong rivalry at times. These teams won't have the issues with each other that they had back in the Malone and Olajuwon era, but they both badly need to keep winning, so the stakes are high. Right now Utah sits in seventh place in the West, and Houston is a game back. If they stumble it could be a long offseason. Read More >>
Pittsburgh at Louisville Picks and College Basketball Odds
by Alan Matthews - 1/28/2013
Is it time to worry about Rick Pitino's Louisville Cardinals, or has the team simply hit a wall while awaiting March Madness? As of this writing, the Cardinals (16-4, 4-3 Big East) are No. 5 in the polls, but they certainly will drop out of the Top 10 when Monday's new polls are released. Louisville was beaten 53-51 at Georgetown on Saturday, the team's third straight loss (0-3 ATS). How unusual is that? Read More >>
Canucks at Kings Picks and NHL Betting Odds

Two of the top favorites to win the Western Conference this season clash this Monday night at the Staples Center when the Vancouver Canucks face off against the Los Angeles Kings. The game is set to get underway at 10:30 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast on TSN. Read More >>

New Mexico at San Diego State Picks and College Basketball Odds
by Robert Ferringo - 1/26/2013
Quick: name me the top three college basketball conferences in the country. I am willing to bet - because that's what I do - that you forgot about The Mountain West. According to the RPI, the most commonly referenced tool for gauging college basketball strength, the Mountain West Conference it he second-best conference in the country. Ken Pomeroy, one of the most well respected statisticians in the sport, has the Mountain West Conference as the No. 3-ranked conference in the country, behind only the Big Ten and the Big East. Avalanche at Sharks Picks and NHL Betting Odds
by Alan Matthews - 1/26/2013
The San Jose Sharks have long been considered underachievers. They usually have some of the greatest collection of offensive talent in the NHL but have yet to reach the Stanley Cup Finals in franchise history. Could this year be different? San Jose again looks dynamic offensively, ranking No. 2 in the league entering Friday's action in averaging five goals per game and No. 3 in power-play percentage at 38.9. Take a look at the NHL points leaders list and it's littered with Sharks: Joe Thornton (nine, No. 1), Patrick Marleau (eight, No. 2), Logan Couture and Joe Pavelski (seven, No. 4). Read More >>
Canisius at Rider Picks and College Basketball Odds
by Alan Matthews - 1/25/2013
Last week, in my Friday NCAA basketball free picks story, I looked at Stony Brook and Vermont, contenders in the America East, which certainly will be a conference that will send only one team to the NCAA Tournament. That also will be the case for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and a key matchup for MAAC Tournament seeding is Friday night in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, when Rider hosts Canisius.
