At Doc's we don't see this as trash basketball, we see this as a huge opportunity to make money...on trash basketball. Each day during the basketball season is an opportunity to make valuable and profitable predictions

What are NBA Picks Against the Spread?

Most NBA bettors are going to make NBA picks against the spread. This is also known as NBA picks ATS. Sportsbooks give each NBA team a handicap of X amount of points. That means if books think the Lakers are 4 points better than the Celtics they will offer a line of Lakers -4. If a Doc's handicapper has reason to believe the Lakers are much more than 4 points better, his pick against the spread would be to take the Lakers -4. This is how all bets on the spread work unless bookmakers consider both teams to be evenly matched, in which case the line is a pick, AKA pick'em. At Doc's the majority of our NBA selections are against the spread. However, there can be outstanding value on betting NBA totals.

What are NBA Over/Under Picks?

The pace of the game, as well as which team dictates the pace, is a key factor when handicapping basketball games. When pace is an especially strong signal, it may dictate a pick on the over/under. An NBA over/under pick is another way of referring to a prediction on an NBA game point total. NBA total lines are usually well above 200 in today's NBA making them harder for the betting public to find value. For example, the 2004 Detroit Pistons team was very consistently within 5 points of the 90 they averaged. In today's NBA, greater scoring means greater variance. However, professional basketball handicappers can use this to their advantage as the sportsbooks also try to keep track of the higher scoring NBA totals. What are NBA Parlay Picks?

Parlay picks are sucker bets they say! Never bet and NBA parlay they say! Bettors that speak in these absolutes clearly haven't learned how to find value betting basketball. Sure, the payout on parlays at most sportsbooks have gone down to the point where putting two of your picks together for the sake of winning more is not a good investment. But what if your parlay picks could be made on the same game? That is called a correlated NBA parlay. Many sportsbooks offer the ability to make NBA bets against the spread and total in the same game. So if you have a great read on a game and expect one team to quit and fall behind, you may decide to make an NBA parlay prediction. At Doc's our experts will offer a free parlay pick in rare cases. It is not common because we need to find value for our customers on both lines before they move. If our parlay prediction is indeed on the same game, we need to confirm there is value regardless of the fact that you can't line shop the odds on a parlay. Both bets in a parlay must be made at the same sportsbook. If there is a free selection on the total over of -14 and under 200 it was offered knowing that those lines can be found at most Las Vegas sportsbooks and online.

What are NBA Playoff Predictions?

Once the regular season is over the NBA tends to resemble the national football league in many ways. Bettors have much more time to make their NBA playoff picks as teams travel to each other's arenas and rest between series. Making successful NBA playoff predictions is as much about when you bet as it is who you bet on. A series might not start for days. That means an NBA spread may move quite a few points especially as the public bets closer to the action. If we see value in a playoff prediction it will rely heavily on getting the line we are quoting in said NBA pick. In the words of the great Tony George, "We are betting numbers, not teams!" That may not be more relevant than when making picks on the NBA playoff games.

Doc's Sports

4-Unit Play Take Brooklyn +4.5 over New York (1 p.m. EST, Sunday April 13)
The Knicks will have a limited roster here. Their starters are one of the best units in the league, but a weak bench has held this team back from being on the same level as the top two teams in the east. Brooklyn will always play hard against their cross town big brother. The Knicks haven’t covered in the last four meetings (one push). This game means more to the Nets, as the Knicks will be looking towards the postseason.
2-Unit Play Take Orlando -3 over Atlanta (1 p.m. EST, Sunday April 13)
These teams are already set to play on Tuesday in the play in tourney, and neither team will take this one too seriously. But Orlando has a better defensive system and we think that will put them over the top here.
4-Unit Play Take Minnesota -23 over Utah (3:30 p.m. EST, Sunday April 13)
This is one game on the schedule that means a lot as the Wolves need to win and have a chance to move into the playoffs and out of the play in tourney. They have been playing their best basketball of the season lately. They have covered in six of their last eight, including some big lines. They covered a 20+ line last time out vs. Brooklyn and the Nets are a much better team than Utah. The Jazz have allowed 140+ in four of their last five games, and you aren’t going to cover many spreads playing that kind of defense. We usually automatically take the underdog with a spread this big, but in this case it seems justified.
4-Unit Play Take LA Clippers +4 over Golden State (3:30 p.m. EST, Sunday April 13)
The old Lob City Clippers were always owned by the Warriors, but this new version of the Clippers has dominated Golden State. They have won six straight and covered in five straight. They are just the better team, they are in better form, and they are one of the hottest teams in the league. Neither team is in a safe position in the playoffs, so this will be like a postseason game, and we think the Clippers will rise to the occasion and they have a great chance for the outright win.

Golden State must win to avoid play in tournament game next week, with based up Curry it’s very important this GSW get week of rest and Warriors play all out to get it. Clippers are also needing win to avoid similar scenario. See low scoring game here as the defenses show up in playoff type atmosphere. Take the Under in Golden State and LA Clippers game on Sunday afternoon.

The Nuggets shook up the NBA as a whole when they fired Mike Malone with two games left before the playoffs start. They still have the Joker and they are in position to host their first round playoff series so look for a playoff type effort in this one. Lay the big number Houston is already in playoff mode and wont be dialed in whatsoever.

5-Unit Play. #561. Take Over 235.5 Denver vs. Houston (Sunday @ 3:40pm est)

We roll with the Over here between these two teams. What you have here is a Denver team that has a new ballcoach now and not without Coach Malone and he has to show progress and he has to show new life into this team that had lost several in a row at one point. With Houston losing back to back games because they are already locked in and resting their starters, we love these backups to give Denver all they can handle in a game that Denver really needs but Houston does not. The Rockets I think will play fast, loose and Denver has not busted out in offense truly the last couple of games because they have had to face Memphis and Sacramento - well, now, they get to face backups and that should allow for them to bust out a bit on offense and at the same time, Houston should be able to have quality success here as these backups get to face Denver and do quite well.

6-Unit Play - #555 Toronto +5.5-110 over San Antonio (Sunday, April 13, 2025, 3:40pm ET)

Take Toronto ATS as my top NBA pick for Sunday. This pick falls into one of my top NBA systems and I actually have Toronto winning this game outright so we are getting a great line here today. San Antonio has dropped four of their last five games overall and Toronto has won six of their last eight games against San Antonio. Opponents have shot 47.4% against San Antonio this season including 36.5% from beyond the arc averaging 116.7 points per game against them and I do expect Toronto to step up defensively in this game here Sunday. We played against the Rockets in their most recent game when they left a lot of regulars on the bench. Most will be cleared to play today and while the Rockets might play VanVleet and others to get some competition before waiting for their playoff series days down the road, I don’t expect them to play normal minutes. Denver is as healthy as it gets and they’re in a battle for playoff positioning. The Nuggets are 2-0 SU/ATS since firing Malone and I’m laying the points with Denver today. Thanks & GL!
