What are NBA Picks Against the Spread?

Most NBA bettors are going to make NBA picks against the spread. This is also known as NBA picks ATS. Sportsbooks give each NBA team a handicap of X amount of points. That means if books think the Lakers are 4 points better than the Celtics they will offer a line of Lakers -4. If a Doc's handicapper has reason to believe the Lakers are much more than 4 points better, his pick against the spread would be to take the Lakers -4. This is how all bets on the spread work unless bookmakers consider both teams to be evenly matched, in which case the line is a pick, AKA pick'em. At Doc's the majority of our NBA selections are against the spread. However, there can be outstanding value on betting NBA totals.

What are NBA Over/Under Picks?

The pace of the game, as well as which team dictates the pace, is a key factor when handicapping basketball games. When pace is an especially strong signal, it may dictate a pick on the over/under. An NBA over/under pick is another way of referring to a prediction on an NBA game point total. NBA total lines are usually well above 200 in today's NBA making them harder for the betting public to find value. For example, the 2004 Detroit Pistons team was very consistently within 5 points of the 90 they averaged. In today's NBA, greater scoring means greater variance. However, professional basketball handicappers can use this to their advantage as the sportsbooks also try to keep track of the higher scoring NBA totals. What are NBA Parlay Picks?

Parlay picks are sucker bets they say! Never bet and NBA parlay they say! Bettors that speak in these absolutes clearly haven't learned how to find value betting basketball. Sure, the payout on parlays at most sportsbooks have gone down to the point where putting two of your picks together for the sake of winning more is not a good investment. But what if your parlay picks could be made on the same game? That is called a correlated NBA parlay. Many sportsbooks offer the ability to make NBA bets against the spread and total in the same game. So if you have a great read on a game and expect one team to quit and fall behind, you may decide to make an NBA parlay prediction. At Doc's our experts will offer a free parlay pick in rare cases. It is not common because we need to find value for our customers on both lines before they move. If our parlay prediction is indeed on the same game, we need to confirm there is value regardless of the fact that you can't line shop the odds on a parlay. Both bets in a parlay must be made at the same sportsbook. If there is a free selection on the total over of -14 and under 200 it was offered knowing that those lines can be found at most Las Vegas sportsbooks and online.

What are NBA Playoff Predictions?

Once the regular season is over the NBA tends to resemble the national football league in many ways. Bettors have much more time to make their NBA playoff picks as teams travel to each other's arenas and rest between series. Making successful NBA playoff predictions is as much about when you bet as it is who you bet on. A series might not start for days. That means an NBA spread may move quite a few points especially as the public bets closer to the action. If we see value in a playoff prediction it will rely heavily on getting the line we are quoting in said NBA pick. In the words of the great Tony George, "We are betting numbers, not teams!" That may not be more relevant than when making picks on the NBA playoff games.

7-Unit Play Take Minnesota -3 over Dallas (7:40 p.m. EST, Wednesday January 22)
The Mavs have tons of injuries across their lineup and even if some of the questionable players hit the court, this team will be severely shorthanded tonight. The Timberwolves have been a bad team to bet on most of the season, but we have found if we pick the right spot for them that it can be advantageous and this looks like a good spot for them to pick up a comfortable win. They have had some losses lately as they have had a very tough schedule, but they have played well even in the losses and this team finally looks like it is gelling a bit with the roster additions. They have won and covered the last two visits to Dallas, and we think this could possibly be a 10-point-or-more victory.
3-Unit Play Take Cleveland -3 over Houston (8 p.m. EST, Wednesday January 22)
Houston is a really strong team but they are in for s tough matchup tonight. They have lost two of three after their long losing streak and this looks like another loss on the books. You have to look seriously at the Cavs any time they have a low spread like this. Cleveland is the No. 1 covering team in the NBA this season, and they are covering nearly 70 percent of their games. The Cavs have covered in six of the last eight meetings. We think Houston will hang tough for awhile but we see the Cavs pull ahead late for a comfortable win.

Cavaliers are just on different level right now. Houston will hang with Cleveland for first half but the Cavaliers wear them down late. Mobley is out for Cavs but the depth of Cleveland will have no problem picking up for him. Cavs improve on impressive 15-4 road record tonight. Take Cleveland on moneyline to get job done on road.

The Nets are falling further into lottery mode, but they play hard most nights and this one will be no different. They dropped a tough one last night to the Knicks and have lost nine of ten games, but the Suns come in with so much uncertainty that the distraction will help the Nets stay in this one until the end. Take the points but do not be surprised if this young group in Brooklyn has a shot to steal this one.

Steph Curry cannot carry the Warriors alone as they are injury riddled and managed just 85 points their last game on Monday which was a monster 40-point white washing at the hands of the Celtics. The Kings have been hot as of late and the coaching change they made has turned them around. The Kings are on a 9-1 tear and they have beaten good teams in that run including the Celtics! Lay it, I smell an easy double digit win here by the Kings who already handed the Warriors a 30-point beatdown on Jan. 5, and have won the last 4 games in a row against GS dating back to 2023. This line will crawl up all day.

Take Detroit ATS as my top NBA pick for Wednesday night. This pick falls into one of my top NBA systems and I really like Detroit in the spot on the road here tonight. Detroit did win their only meeting against Atlanta earlier this season however Detroit is playing much better basketball now than they did back then. Detroit is coming off a nice 11-point victory at Houston despite being 7.5 point underdogs. Atlanta has really struggled defensively this season allowing 119 points per game with opponents shooting 37.7% against them from beyond the arc and 47.5% against them overall. Play Detroit ATS

I’m taking the points with Golden State. The Warriors are off a 40-point loss to Boston and if that’s not enough to get Curry & Company fired-up and motivated, they’ll be in revenge for a 30-point loss to Sacramento earlier this month. Tonight’s game has seen a line adjustment of more than 10 points at the time of this writing, thanks in part to the ugly performance Golden State turned in against Boston. Normally getting the Rockets as a home dog is something I jump on right away but not here. The Cavs are just a difficult matchup for the Rockets as they have the size inside to limit Sengun and they can take advantage of Houston's poor defensive effort on the three-point line. The Cavs are 11-4 ATS as an away favorite this season so playing in Houston isn't something that will shake Cleveland. Lay the small number here.

Sacramento has struggled this year in games where they've been favored going just 10-21 against the spread. On the other side of things look for Golden State to bring everything to this contest. The Warriors not only were blown out by this Sacramento team less than three weeks ago losing at home by 30 points but they were completely embarrassed at home on Monday as well losing by 40 points to Boston. This is a veteran group that knows how to step up especially after an ugly loss as evidenced by the fact the Warriors are 6-1 against the spread this year the game following a defeat by more than 10 points.

Take Golden State plus the points here. Huge 7u NHL play on tap for Wednesday on the ice. I'm 9-5 all sports so far in 2025 rated 7u and up. Like this one a lot tonight in hockey action!!

2 Unit Play - Take #543 Detroit (+3) Over Atlanta. (7:30p.m, Wednesday, January 22nd)
Detroit comes into this game 22-21 on the year, 7-3 in their last 10 games, and coming off a 107-96 win over Houston on the road Monday. Atlanta is now 22-20 on the year, 5-5 in their last 10 games, and coming off a 119-110 loss to New York on Monday. Tonight is a massive flip of events. Atlanta thrives on speed, pace of play, and points per game. Detroit thrives on a slow, controlled pace, boards, and defense. Atlanta just dealt with Boston on the road and New York on the road in their 2 most recent meetings, so the strength of schedule most definitely can appear to have worn out this aggressive offense. Detroit is a solid 12-10 on the road, 11-5-1 ATS as a road underdog, 14-7-1 ATS on the road, and 17-11-2 ATS as an underdog. I believe we are going to see an exhausted Atlanta team tonight based on their strength of schedule and place of spot here. I believe Detroit rolls them and would not be surprised at all to see Detroit win this game outright. Having said that, we must take the points here for insurance.

2 Unit - Take #555 Golden State Warriors (+7) over Sacramento Kings (-110) (10:00p.m, Wednesday, January 22nd)

Tonight, the Golden State Warriors will be playing against the Sacramento Kings. The Kings have been playing excellent basketball recently. They have a record of 12-12 at home and are now .500 at home, which means they tend to struggle there. But in their last ten games, they’re 9-1. On the other hand, the Warriors won't have Green with them tonight. Curry will be playing, and he typically does quite well against the Kings. However, the Warriors have a record of 5-5 in their last 10 games and just lost to the Celtics by a score of 125-85. The Kings had won two games leading up to this one. They last won against the Wizards, with a score of 123-100. But I feel this game might be a little closer than people predict tonight. Especially after they just got blown away at home. I think we will witness some Curry magic tonight and cover by at least 7 points. Tonight, bet on the Golden State Warriors to cover +7 against the Sacramento Kings.
