New Year's Resolutions in Sports Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 12/29/2006
2006 is taking its last few breaths, and 2007 is waiting in the wings for its grand entry. This time of year, once you've managed to finish off all the leftover turkey from Christmas, and while you are watching football games that you would never watch during the regular season, it's important to sit back and reflect on what you did this year and what you want to do next year.

The Value of Home Field Advantage
by Trevor Whenham - 12/23/2006
Of all the factors that go into handicapping, few get mentioned, discussed, overcompensated, undercompensated or ignored more than the advantage of playing at home. If you do enough reading and you talk to enough people then you will become thoroughly confused about the importance of home field advantage, the value that should be assigned to it, and the best wagering strategies to deal with it.

NFL: How Important is the Quarterback?
by Trevor Whenham - 12/21/2006
If you're a football fan, or even if you have ever watched a football game on TV, then you know that the conventional wisdom is that a team has to have a good quarterback to win. That's why quarterbacks get paid more than any other player, and why the top five picks in the draft every year usually includes a pivot or two. If you were to look at the stats for week 15 in the NFL, though, you would wonder if this wisdom has any merit at all.

Christmas List for NFL Teams
by Trevor Whenham - 12/21/2006
Christmas is just a few days away, so I thought I would help the big, jolly guy in the red suit out a bit. He's got a lot of work to do, so he probably doesn't get to watch sports as much as he would like to, and he therefore probably can't keep track of what some NFL teams need for Christmas. I, on the other hand, spend more time than is normal, or healthy, watching and following the league, so I have a few ideas:

Value in NFL Player Props?
by Trevor Whenham - 12/15/2006
Face it - we're all a bunch of degenerates. If we weren't then books wouldn't be throwing out more and more ways for us to bet on football all the time. Back in the old days you used to have to pick which team would win, lay -110, and hope you were right. Now there are hundreds of different ways you can give the sportsbooks your money - totals, halves, quarters, futures, teasers, reverse teasers, parlays, team props, individual props.

Ferringo NFL Report: Dogs Have Their Day... Again
by Robert Ferringo - 12/12/2006
I watched the first 45 minutes of "Cujo" one late night last week. You know: psychotic, violent dog running roughshod through a small, sleepy town. It got me thinking about the current state of betting in the NFL, as rabid dogs continue to lay siege to bettors' stacks each week. At first it was confusing, and maybe horrifying to some who made a mint last year when it was the favorites that couldn't be contained by some feeble Vegas spread.

Breaking Down the NFL QB Rating
by Trevor Whenham - 12/12/2006
The San Diego game on Sunday was over soon after it started, leaving announcer Phil Simms desperate for something to talk about. That's always dangerous. You can only talk about how good LaDainian Tomlinson is for so long, so Simms had to find something else to drone on about endlessly. He settled on the passer rating. He doesn't like it, as it turns out. I don't like him much, either.

Dear Santa: My Sports Betting Wish List
by Robert Ferringo - 12/12/2006
I'd like to think that I've been a good boy this year. I've quit beating up hobos, stopped mocking old people and teasing handicapped children, and did my part to make the world a better place by voting Democrat. I've tried to lead an honest, decent life for the past 300+ days and I think I've been pretty successful. So now it's time for my reward. Because no matter what those religious zealots say we all know that Christmas is about presents!

My Odds On NFL Coaches to be Fired
by Trevor Whenham - 12/05/2006
The last four weeks of the NFL regular season are when fans of good teams prepare for the playoff runs, and fans of bad teams call for their coach's head. Last year the coaching carousel spun at warp speed, with ten teams bringing in new faces to run the sidelines. Of those ten teams, only the Saints, Jets and Chiefs are playing really well after the change.

Ferringo NFL Report: Kickers Cause Commotion for Bettors
by Robert Ferringo - 12/05/2006
Every week some god-forsaken kicker ends up costing bettors hundreds of thousands of dollars. It's a given and an accepted hazard in betting football. But each year there's one week where those damn little grass ferries take over the NFL, for good or ill, and impact the upwards of millions of dollars.

NFC Wild Card Race
by Trevor Whenham - 12/05/2006
The NFC is not having a good year. There are some teams that are playing well, but all of them have some questions. The four teams that are clearly better than the rest of the conference are all in different divisions. That means that the four division races are essentially non-races unless something dramatic and unexpected happens in the next four weeks.

The Proper Way to Play NFL Teasers
by Trevor Whenham - 12/04/2006
If you know how to properly bet teasers then they can be a fun and profitable way to get some action on the NFL. If you're not using them properly, however, you might as well just put your money in a big pile and burn it. The result will be the same and it won't take up as much of your time or cause you as much frustration.

Turnovers in NFL Making for Some Ugly Games
by Robert Ferringo - 12/04/2006
I'm a die-hard Chicago Bears fan. I have been since I was seven. So it wasn't surprising to my wife that I started drinking hard liquor at 9 a.m. last Sunday in anticipation of Chicago clinching the NFC North crown. It wasn't the least bit surprising; it was pretty much expected.

Arena Football 2007 Schedule
by Vegas Sports Informer - 12/01/2006
The betting public always thinks that football is over in February. But for a small amount of degenerate gamblers like me the Arena Football League season starts March 1. That's right, this week the schedule for the 21st season of the AFL was released. The countdown to '07 kickoff is less then 90 days away. Let the handicapping begin!

Chicago Bears Could Have Playoff Troubles
by Trevor Whenham - 11/30/2006
Let me say this up front - unless they change things around dramatically in the next six weeks the Bears are going nowhere in the playoffs. It seems risky to write off the team that has two more wins than any other in the conference, but this team is as flawed as a 9-2 team can be. Their biggest attribute, though, is that they play in the NFC, so there aren't a lot of quality teams to chase them down. Still, they have too many problems that they need to overcome right now if they want to be somewhere other than their couches at home on Super Bowl Sunday:

AFC Playoffs Should Offer Some Great Match-ups
by Trevor Whenham - 11/29/2006
The NFC isn't setting any records for excitement or competitiveness this year, but the AFC playoff race is as tight and as tough as it could possibly be. Not only is the wild card fight going to go down to the last day of the season, but there are four teams at the top of the conference that would be rightful favorites in the Super Bowl if they continue to play like they are now. It's going to be quite a battle for playoff spots, and for home field advantage. Here's a look at how it shapes up:

What to Expect from Thanksgiving NFL Games
by Robert Ferringo - 11/21/2006
Who knew that the History Channel had a sense of humor? Not I, but those closet sex fiends and desperate revisionists are responsible for my new favorite commercial. It features a girl in elementary school at her class play. She's dressed as a Puritan and is talking about the first Thanksgiving to an audience of disaffected and apathetic parents.

Examining Thanksgiving NFL Trends
by Trevor Whenham - 11/21/2006
It's Thanksgiving again. Or at least for most of you it is. I'm a Canadian, so our Thanksgiving was more than a month ago. No turkey for me on Thursday, but at least I don't have to put up with huge crowds in an airport somewhere, and I still get to sit on the couch all day and watch football. An extra full day of football every year is truly a great thing, and I'm thankful even if it isn't the day I'm supposed to be.

Ferringo NFL Report: Short on Words, Not on Logic
by Robert Ferringo - 11/21/2006
Alright, it's a holiday week so my columns are going to be a bit shorter. And by "a bit" I mean "a lot". No worries, though. I only have so much time this week, which will be focused on making my selections (which are going to be posted Wednesday). The rest of my time will be spent on a plethora of standard holiday traditions: watching my wife and in-laws make Christmas cookies for seven hours knowing I could be watching college basketball, dodging people I never liked in high school, kicking it with my nephews and thanking the Lord I don't have kids, arguing with rental car and airline employees, eating, and drinking heavily with the people I did like in high school.

Tennessee Titans A Hot Bet
by Trevor Whenham - 11/21/2006
The Titans may not be a very good team, and there is a lot not to like about them, but they have been very friendly to bettors this season. They are 6-2 against the spread in their last eight games, and they had gone over four games in a row before pushing the total on Sunday against Philadelphia. They are benefiting from big spreads and not a lot of love from the public, and they are paying off for those that are backing them.

NFL Players that Carry Their Teams to Betting Wins
by Trevor Whenham - 11/21/2006
As I was watching San Diego come back and dismantle Denver in the second half of the Sunday night game this week, I was struck by just how good LaDainian Tomlinson is. Sure, Philip Rivers is playing very well, and there is all sorts of talent on both sides of the ball for the Chargers, but Tomlinson is such a huge part of that team that you have to think that the Chargers would be lost if he were to get hurt. They wouldn't be without hope, but it would certainly be much harder for them to win.

Tis' the Season of the NFL Underdog
by Trevor Whenham - 11/17/2006
This season, and the last few weeks in particular, have been decidedly one-sided when it comes to betting outcomes. The underdogs covered 21-of-30 games played over the course of the last two weeks. You can handicap all you want, but chances are pretty good that a trend that strong is going to wreak havoc on you.

Strange NFL Trends
by Trevor Whenham - 11/16/2006
Think about how you handicap the NFL. You probably watch the games, read some stats, follow what the press is writing, track injuries, and figure that all into your decisions. In the end, though, it often all comes down to a gut feeling. Behind those feelings are often assumptions based on the impressions we hold about teams.

Stat Advantage: Texans in Rare Chalk Situation
by Allen Eastman - 11/15/2006
Houston is favored for the first time this season. Laying less than a field goal against the Bills, the Texans actually may be worth investing in. In their last four games, the Texans have defeated the Jaguars twice and nearly upset the Giants.

Ferringo NFL Report: "Borat Like the Football"
by Robert Ferringo - 11/15/2006
If you haven't seen the new Borat movie this is all I'm going to say - you need to. I was a huge fan of "The Ali G Show" and Borat was a huge highlight (though Ali G's interviews were still the best part of the show). The man is an icon at the moment, so for my Ferringo Report on Week 10 I thought I'd break down the NFL action through the eyes of everyone's favorite Kahzikstani.

Inconsistent NFL Teams Hard to Gauge
by Trevor Whenham - 11/14/2006
When it comes to betting on the NFL, there is nothing more frustrating than an inconsistent team. If a team is just plain bad, or they are almost unbeatable, then it becomes relatively simple to make decisions about the games they are playing. If a team is great at home, or lousy against teams that can run, or their likely effort is somehow obvious in another way, then we can be comfortable in our selections.

Jacksonville Jaguars Hard to Figure Out
by Trevor Whenham - 11/10/2006
Betting on the Jacksonville Jaguars has made me miserable so far this year, and I am sure that I'm not alone in that feeling. They've put up impressively strong performances, then followed them up with mystifyingly bad ones. There is no theory or system that could explain how a team that beat the surprising Jets 41-0 one week could come back the very next week and lose by 20 to Houston. Or how they can do a better job shutting down the Colts than anyone has done all year a week after they annihilated Pittsburgh, then let Washington run all over them.

What We Learned from Three NFL Upsets
by Trevor Whenham - 11/08/2006
If you were betting on the NFL last weekend, there's a good chance that you ended the weekend with a pretty serious headache. Chicago, Atlanta and Minnesota seemed to many to be among the safest bets on the week, yet they all managed to lose as favorites, falling to Miami, Detroit and San Francisco, respectively. In each case the losses were fairly ugly, and each game probably has to somewhat change our perceptions of each team involved.

The 'Over'whelming Colts
by Joshua Fairbanks - 11/08/2006
Sunday night I sat down, like most NFL fans did, and watched another classic battle between Manning and Brady. Once again, everyone seemed to side with Brady and the Patriots. Don't get me wrong, though, there were still a few true believers that did think Peyton was going to get it done all along. Last year the Colts dominated in Foxboro beating the Pats 40-21.

Ferringo NFL Report: K-Fed, T.O. Drop the Ball
by Robert Ferringo - 11/07/2006
Over the course of the past three weekends the underdogs have posted a 23-17 mark against the spread. It appears that the books have gotten over that whole "favorites won't stop covering!" thing, Also, home dogs have been an automatic play, going 18-9 ATS over the course of the past six weeks.

Bengals in a Tailspin
by Trevor Whenham - 11/03/2006

NFL QBs: Dark Ages or Age of Discovery?

How Injuries Impact the Point Spread

Week 8 Advice for NFL Suicide Pools
by Drew Mangione - 10/25/2006
A good friend of mine reminded me on Sunday evening that a wise man once said "Never take road favorites in a divisional game." That wise man was, of course, me. Did I listen? No. Another wise man told me last Wednesday to stay away, far away, from the Jacksonville at Houston game. That man was Doc's Sports writer and handicapper Robert Ferringo. I should have listened to him. I should have listened to myself.

SD Chargers in Big Trouble on Defense
by Trevor Whenham - 10/24/2006
Shawne Merriman is an idiot. Last year's Defensive Rookie of the Year tested positive for steroids and has been suspended for four San Diego Chargers games. Predictably, his lawyer claims that the 'roids were in a supplement that Merriman was taking, but that they weren't a listed ingredient and Merriman didn't know he was taking them.

Are You Byeing This?
by Robert Ferringo - 10/23/2006
One time, while playing Pac-Man in some musty, back-alley biker bar in the hills of West Virginia, I heard a man say that, "luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." The man was just reciting what he had read on the bathroom stall, but was also quoting Seneca, a Roman philosopher who was a huge fan of Stoicism and the no-huddle offense.

Week 8: Betting Off The Bye
by Robert Ferringo - 10/23/2006
Here is a look at the four games from Week 8 that feature teams off a bye. Notice that two of the games pit a pair of rested clubs against one another. That means that one won't cover and will prove my theory correct, while the other will beat the line and prove me wrong. So no matter what, I am right. And wrong. Nevermind.

Why are Key Numbers Important in the NFL?
by Trevor Whenham - 10/19/2006
Key numbers are simply the most common margin of victories in football games. A team can win or lose a game by almost any number of points (my alma mater once lost by 105), but there are some margins that are considerably more likely. The most common key number is 3.

Week Seven Advice for Suicide Pools
by Drew Mangione - 10/19/2006
Monday night was pure insanity. Why did I take the Bears? WHY! I can't count high enough to tell you how many times I said those words. It didn't look good and in a week when almost everyone else in the pool took the Broncos and advanced, my frustration was close to tearing apart my recliner, shattering a glass door, and severing the lining of my stomach as I crammed chips, pasta and beer down my gullet.

This NFL Season is Hard to Figure Out
by Trevor Whenham - 10/19/2006
The last few minutes of last Monday's game when Chicago stormed back to beat Arizona was one of the craziest and most unbelievable things I have ever seen in all the time I have been watching football. Chicago was a 12.5-point favorite, so the betting outcome had been determined long before the game ended, but the last Chicago touchdown did push the total over the 40.5 number.

Week Six Advice for NFL Suicide Pools
by Drew Mangione - 10/13/2006
The pool of sweat beneath me around 4 p.m. Sunday was tremendous. My friend's leather recliner is certainly worse for wear. However, once the early games were over and the dog lapped up the tsunami of worries, my suicide pool slots were safe and only my pride was in jeopardy. Don't Overestimate The Colts
by Trevor Whenham - 10/12/2006
The Indianapolis Colts have caused more than a few headaches for bettors so far this year. They are 5-0, but anyone who thinks that they are as good as their record indicates is either a blindly loyal fan or they haven't watched the team play much so far this year. The team is 3-2 ATS, but they have lost the last two against the spread, and two of their three covers have been by just two points or less.

Steelers Sink to New Low
by Trevor Whenham - 10/12/2006
It was just nine months ago that the Pittsburgh Steelers were the darlings of the national media. Week Five Advice for Suicide Pools
by Drew Mangione - 10/06/2006
I'm alive. Barely. No, I'm not talking about my suicide pool picks, which won easily. No, rather I decided to play a little game Monday night-take a shot of whiskey each time Kornheiser, Theisman and Tirico said those two magic words, Terrell Owens. Well, after the first quarter, I felt as though I had overdosed on pain medication and knew my only recourse was to switch to beer.

Oakland Raiders Look Like the NFL's Worst Team
by Trevor Whenham - 10/03/2006
The Oakland Raiders are bad. Really, really bad. They have a real shot at being historically bad. They are 0-3, 0-3 against the spread, and they haven't posted a win in their last nine regular season games. They were AFC Champions in 2002, which isn't that long ago, but they have posted an ugly 13-38 record and sent two head coaches onto the scrap heap since then.

Revised NFL Predictions After Week Four
by Robert Ferringo - 10/03/2006
You always need to be sure that you take some time away from everyday life and do a little self-evaluation. Should I have called the cops after I hit that homeless person with the car?
