Under new head coach Blake Anderson, Utah State had a historic season, finishing 11-3 and winning the Mountain West for the first-time school history. They even ended the year defeating Oregon State in the LA Bowl. This year Logan Bonner and the Aggies look to repeat and capture another championship. Offense / Defense

Utah State’s offense is probably the most lethal part of their identity. Averaging 446 yards and 33 points per game last season, this new coaching staff has them firing on all cylinders. To really see the difference in this new offense, in 2020 the Aggies only generated 276 yards per game. A 170 yards per game difference. Crazy. The run game was decent last year, but passing was top tier. Veteran QB Logan Bonner came over with the new coaches from Arkansas State and threw 36 touchdown passes on the year. Deven Thompkins, Brandon Bowling, and Derek Wright are gone. However, to fill the pass catching void, the Aggies now have Brian Cobbs from Maryland, and Justin McGriff is a good veteran target. All-star left tackle Alfred Edwards and right guard Quazzel White are back, keeping the O-Line mostly intact, helping running back Calvin Tyler Jr., who rushed for 884 yards last season.

The improved Aggies defense led the Mountain West in tackles for loss but gave up close to 400 yards per game last season. Defensive end Byron Vaughns had another fantastic spring. He recorded 10.5 tackles for a loss and 4.0 sacks last year. He is joined up front by tackle Hale Motu'apuaka and Nevada transfer Daniel Grzesiak. The linebacker corps on this team are less experienced than past seasons but will be led by AJ Vongphachanh. If the Aggies defense wants to take it to the next level this upcoming season, they need to come up with more big plays. With minimal picks, and broken up passes, the corners will need to be better. The defense only allowed 24 points or fewer in seven of their last nine games. If they can avoid outlier games like Wyoming and Air Force in 2021, this could be a solid middle tiered defense in College Football.

Keys to the 2022 Season

Avoid the TURNOVERS. Now you can say that about any team, but the 23 giveaways last season was a little much. In all 3 of their losses, the Aggies were -2 in the turnover margin. The running game needs to take a step forward, averaging 4 plus yards per carry would be huge, and only help the phenomenal passing game even more.  Avoiding giving up constant 1st downs will be crucial for the D this year. And to have the same red zone effort as last season will be crucial, as Utah State allowed offenses to come up with touchdowns only 45% of the time – 10th best in college football. Coming out strong each game will be key this season, as the Aggies struggled in 1st quarters last year.

Utah State won its first Mountain West championship ever, recorded its first victory against a ranked opponent in six years, won a bowl game, beat two Power 5 conference teams in the same season, and finished ranked No. 24 in both polls. Coming into this year with the same offensive, defensive, and special teams’ coordinators creates chemistry and new durability for the new season.  The Aggies need to win at least one big, tough road game this year. At Colorado State, at Wyoming, and this year, at Hawaii in mid-November will all be challenging. However, if Utah State can win 1-2 of those games, another double-digit win season could be in the books. I believe they continue their momentum form last season and compete for another league title.
