2024-25 San Jose Sharks Predictions and Odds to Win Stanley Cup Finals
Last season was an ugly one for the San Jose Sharks from the get-go. They started the season in the worst way possible, losing 11 straight games with a -43-goal differential. This wasn’t the only long-term losing skid for San Jose. They also saw losing streaks of 12 and nine (two different times). Their 47 points and -150 goal differential were the worst marks in the NHL.
The Sharks were bad everywhere. Their offense ranked 31st in the league, as they averaged just 2.20 GF/G. Their special teams were also terrible, as their 20.2% PP% ranked 21st and their 75.4% PK% ranked 28th. Mikael Granlund, despite playing in only 69 games, led the Sharks in points with 60, while he also led the team with 48 assists. William Eklund finished second on the team with 45 points, while Fabian Zetterlund led the team with 24 goals and finished third on the roster with 44 points. Tomas Hertl and Anthony Duclair finished fourth and fifth on the team in points despite being shipped away at the deadline. William Eklund’s -45 +/- rating was the worst rating in the NHL.
Though their offense ranked 31st in the league, San Jose’s goaltending was worse. They allowed 3.98 GA/G, which was the most in the league by a significant amount. The Sharks .892 SV% ranked 30th amongst the NHL teams, while their 2,880 shots against were the most in the league. San Jose had five different goalies last season. Mackenzie Blackwood saw the most action, appearing in 44 games while allowing 3.45 GA/G on a .899 SV%. Kaapo Kahkonen played in 31 games for the Sharks before being traded to New Jersey at the deadline. Kahkonen allowed 3.82 GA/G on a .895 SV%. After Kahkonen’s departure, Magnus Chrona and Devin Cooley split time in the crease as the backup, where the two combined to allow 4.85 GA/G on a lowly .865 SV%. Georgi Romanov was the fifth goalie, appearing in two games while allowing just one goal on 30 shots against.

Seasons come and go, so now it’s time to take a look at what we can expect from the San Jose Sharks in 2024-25:
San Jose Sharks Key Additions/Losses
Not only do the already bad Sharks enter the season without Tomas Hertl and Anthony Duclair, but they also traded away former first rounders Ozzy Wiesblatt (2020) and David Edstrom (2023) along with Magnus Chrona and a 2025 first round pick all to Nashville. They also traded away Kyle Burroughs (eight points) and Ty Emberson (10 points). Calen Addison (12 points), Alexander Barabanov (13 points), Mike Hoffman (23 points), Kevin Labanc (nine points), Jacob MacDonald (nine points), and Filip Zadina (23 points) are also off the roster.
As for their additions, in the big trade with Nashville, they acquired top goalie prospect Yaroslav Askarov, hoping he can be the goalie of the future for the Sharks. They also acquired Cody Ceci (25 points), Carl Grundstrom (12 points), Jake Walman (21 points), and Ty Dellandrea (nine points) via trade. The Sharks also signed big name free agent Tyler Toffoli (55 points) as well as Alexander Wennberg (30 points). It also helps drafting Macklin Celebrini with the first pick in the draft. Celebrini should immediately find himself on the Sharks top line.
San Jose Sharks X-Factors
The Front Office- The Sharks are still a long way away from being a competitive NHL team. They do have some exciting foundational pieces in place with Celebrini (18), Eklund (22), Yaroslav Askarov (22), and Fabian Zetterlund (25), but they are years away from being a playoff caliber team. The Sharks will also head into the season with some interesting trade bait as they have Tyler Toffoli, Logan Couture, Mikael Granlund, Alexander Wennberg, Cody Ceci, Jake Walman, and Vitek Vanecek. In addition to the trade pieces, they are projected to head into the 2025 offseason with nearly $40million in cap space to work with. The front office needs to take advantage of drafting a generational talent like Celebrini and build around him.
San Jose Sharks Goalie Outlook
Mackenzie Blackwood is the only returning netminder for the Sharks, which is good news as the team has actually upgraded at the position. After acquiring Vitek Vanecek in the trade with New Jersey and Yaroslav Askarov in the offseason trade with Nashville, the Sharks have a stronger goalie group heading into the new campaign. It will be good for the Sharks to get Askarov some exposure this season, but all signs point to Blackwood being the guy unless he puts up numbers similar to last year’s. Though there were some improvements, unless Askarov unexpectedly dominates from the get-go, the Sharks goalie group is still one of the worst in the league.

San Jose Sharks Prediction
Outside of Macklin Celebrini to win the Calder Trophy, there is nothing attractive about the Sharks from a futures perspective. They are likely going to be one of the worst teams in the NHL again this season. Though they added some producers like Cody Ceci and Tyler Toffoli, they are likely going to be traded before the deadline for future capital. With that, the Sharks will fall off big time down the home stretch of the season, all but assuring the under on the Team Point total. Though they have Celebrini now and are a little better in front of the net, the Sharks are not going to see an 18-point improvement from a season ago.
