2024 PGA Picks: Valero Texas Open Odds and Expert Betting Predictions
The PGA Tour has a stronger-than-normal field this week as players are set to take on TPC San Antonio for the Valero Texas Open. With one week of preparation before the first major championship in 2024 at The Masters, Rory Mcllroy headlines the field, followed by Ludvig Aberg, Jordan Spieth, and company. It is the third-longest running event on the Tour, and Corey Conners will look to make it back-to-back as the defending champion. Doc’s Sports will break down some of the best plays from TPC San Antonio for this week’s event.

Course Characteristics of Those Who Can Win or Secure Winning Golf Bets
The Oaks Course has been home to the Valero Texas Open since 2010 and was designed by Greg Norman. The layout plays as a par-72 and measures a little over 7,400 yards. The rough is not as thick as most PGA Tour courses, but the fairways are narrow and one bad miss can ruin a players’ round. The course layout resembles desert courses with rocks, tight branches, and the unpredictable nature off the tee boxes for bad mistakes. The Oaks Course annually ranks inside the top-15 in terms of scoring difficulty, which should provide a solid test to prepare for the Masters. There is very little water throughout the course, but massive bunkers protect some of the greens that are steep and challenging. The 18th hole is the most famous challenge on this course with a winding and rock protected creek that can cause havoc when closing out a win.
Ludvig Aberg +1200
This is Aberg’s first full season on the PGA Tour and the young Swedish phenom has had a great start to the 2024 campaign. He has not missed a cut and has finished outside the top-30 in only one tournament, The Sentry, to open the year. Aberg ranks 13th in strokes gained overall and there are very few flaws in his game. He should also be well rested after two weeks off following a solo eighth-place at The Players Championship. You need superior iron play to succeed at The Oaks Course and Aberg’s skills with the irons can be overlooked. He ranks second on the PGA Tour in average proximity to the hole and hits greens in regulation 70% of the time, which ranks 29th on the Tour. I am looking for Aberg to pick up a victory this week in Texas.
Billy Horschel +3500
If you have been reading my golf picks, I said back in January to expect Horschel to turn it around after a miserable 2023 season, and that is exactly what he has done. It is no secret that he is an extremely hard worker in the offseason and it is paying off in 2024. Horschel finished T7 last week at the Houston Open, which came on the heels of a T12 at Valspar and T9 at the Cognizant Classic. His ball-striking has been superb as he has gained 3.8 or more strokes in three of his last four starts. He ranks 11th in this field in SG: Tee-to-Green and third in Total Strokes Gained over his past 16 rounds, only trailing Aberg and Hideki Matsuyama. He also boasts a solid course history with three top-four finishes and a T11 across seven starts this decade.
Maverick McNealy +5000
After last season’s injury, McNealy has looked sharp out of the gate in 2024. He has already posted multiple top-10 finishes at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and The Players, which are two difficult courses. He ranks 12th in the field in SG: Tee-to-Green and third in Total Strokes Gained over the past 24 rounds. McNealy has only played this course once and finished T35. He gained 8.5 strokes ball-striking that week, but could not hole a putt. His putting has been great in 2024 and he looks destined for his first-career victory sooner than later.
