NFL Confidence Pool Picks Week 2
Week 1 is officially in the books, and what a week it was. We went 10-6 in our picks and brought back 96 points out of a possible 136 (70.6%). We would have had a monster first week, but Cincinnati came out flatter than 3-day opened cola against New England and lost outright as a 7.5-point favorite at home. Take solace, though; over 30% of the survivor pool I'm in was knocked out with that pick, so their contest is over while we just took a hit on our first week.
While I completely understand wanting to expand the NFL brand globally, is that expansion worth the health of its up-and-coming superstars? Green Bay's franchise quarterback, Jordan Love, was injured on the final play of their game against Philadelphia in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The field conditions, which could be, at best, characterized as "not ideal," started bad and progressively worsened. Soccer pitches in different countries all have differing levels of field maintenance. If the NFL is truly concerned about player safety, they need to ensure some consistency in the field standards in foreign countries, as they do domestically.
Doc’s Sports offers NFL expert picks for every game on our NFL predictions page.
16 points- Philadelphia Eagles over Atlanta Falcons (MNF): Philadelphia RB Saquon Barkley's debut for the Eagles could not have been any better. The last time a Philly RB scored three times in a game was Boston Scott in 2019. The Eagles offense is going to be lethal with an honest-to-goodness rushing attack.
15 points- Dallas Cowboys over New Orleans Saints: The Saints exploded offensively last week against Carolina, winning 47-10 at home. However, they gained 379 only total yards, and the Panthers don't have LB Micah Parsons. Dallas was a perfect 8-0 in Jerry World last year.
14 points- Baltimore Ravens over Las Vegas Raiders: The Ravens are making all of their offensive skill players drop a shoe size after WR Isiah Likely was ruled out of bounds on a game-ending score that would have set the Ravens up for OT or even a 2-pt conversion win against Kansas City on opening night. Las Vegas is 1-5 SU and ATS in their six visits to B-More as dogs.
13 points- San Francisco over Minnesota: I'm not saying that CMC isn't a fantastic running back, but Jordan Mason's 147 yards and 1 TD showed that the offensive line led the Niner's rushing attack. Minnesota's pass defense, which ranked in the bottom quarter last season in terms of yards per game, will look to be tested by a strong San Francisco passing attack.
12 points- Houston Texans over Chicago Bears (SNF): The good news for Caleb Williams: He became the first QB selected first overall in the draft to win a season opener since David Carr (Derek's older brother) did it for the expansion Houston Texans in 2002. The bad news is he had absolutely nothing to do with it, completing less than 50% of his passes for 93 yards. Caleb discovers what life is like on the road, and it won't be pretty.
11 points- Kansas City Chiefs over Cincinnati Bengals: As if the Chiefs needed any more help, rookie WR Xavier Worthy showed that his combine record-setting 40 time of 4.21 seconds translates to game speed as well, scoring a rushing and receiving TD.
10 points- Los Angeles Chargers over Carolina Panthers: A sign the Apocalypse is upon us: An Ohio State running back and Michigan coach winning together. J.K. Dobbins, the aforementioned RB, had a great game against Las Vegas, and the Panthers just gave up 180 yards on the ground to New Orleans.
9 points- Washington Commanders over New York Giants: It is hard to describe how bad the Giants are right now. They'll be lucky to win four games this season. Washington is only slightly better, but they are. Rookie QB Jayden Daniels looked impressive in his debut, going 17-24 (70.8%) 184 yards with no TDs or INTs.
8 points- Detroit Lions over Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Tampa Bay's QB, veteran Baker Mayfield, has some pretty drastic home-road splits, with a road record of 16-30 versus his home record of 27-17. That is not good news for the traveling Bucs.
7 points- Miami Dolphins over Buffalo Bills (TNF): The Bills better hope the Miami PD doesn't pull over Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill again. After last Sunday's incident, Hill channeled his aggression against Jacksonville, hauling 7 catches for 130 yards and one 80-yard TD.
6 points- Green Bay Packers over Indianapolis Colts: The Packers defense will wreak havoc on Indianapolis's QB, Anthony Richardson. The Colts were gouged by Cincinnati's RB, Joe Mixon, and Green Bay's Josh Jacobs, who is as good, if not better than him.
5 points- Jacksonville Jaguars over Cleveland Browns: The Browns must have buyer's remorse after signing QB Deshaun Watson. While he has an 8-5 record in his 13 career starts, that's over the course of 2+ seasons: His stat line: 228-386 (59.1%), 2,386 yards, 15 TDs, and 11 INTs.
4 points- Tennessee Titans over New York Jets: Tennessee's defense looked in mid-season form. The offense… not so much. Luckily for them, the Jets QB Aaron Rodgers appeared to have a considerable amount of rust to work off.
3 points- Denver Broncos over Pittsburgh Steelers: Denver is accustomed to being a short home dog, going 5-5 SU and 8-2 ATS over its last 10 games in that situation. Steelers' new QB Justin Fields has a losing record as a starter in the NFL and is an atrocious 5-16 on the road.
2 points- Los Angeles Rams over Arizona Cardinals: Los Angeles received disappointing news earlier this week when All-Pro WR Puka Nucua was placed on the IR. However, the Rams went 13-2 SU in the last 15 games they played against Arizona, and Nucua was absent in most of them.
1 point- Seattle Seahawks over New England Patriots: The Pats killed many survivor pool picks last week in their victory over Cincinnati, myself included. But I've got some blood from Missouri, so they're going to have to show me again.
