Free Basketball and NHL Picks for Weekend by Handicapper Doug Upstone
We have a variety of sports betting action from college basketball and the NHL to cover this weekend with the NBA All-Star break. Take a minute to review all the betting trends, our free picks and predictions (182-152-3 of late) to see what we are thinking about today. See you back here next week.
CBB - (559) QUINNIPIAC at (560) ST. PETER'S 7:00 ET ESPN3
Both teams are 11-11 on the year, but St. Peter's has supplanted Quinnipiac for a first-place tie in the MAAC by winning six of eight (6-2 ATS), while the Bobcats have gone the exact opposite way at 2-6 SU and ATS. The Peacocks were sent out as seven-point home favorites, but at last look, they were down to -4.5. The concern among bettors is Quinnipiac is 8-1 ATS in road games having lost three of their last four games and 10-2 ATS away after a contest where they failed to cover the spread. To me, we have greater value on the home favorite now, who is 15-7 ATS on the season and a perfect 6-0 ATS having won three of their last four conflicts.
Betting Trend - 64% backing St. Peter's
Doug's Doc's Take - St. Peter's covers
NHL - (75) N.Y. RANGERS at (76) COLUMBUS 7:08 ET MSG, FSOH
The New York Rangers are on their second three-game winning streak of the season and will try and make it four in a row for the first time. Columbus has dropped three straight for the first time since early December after a 9-1-3 run. Those placing NHL picks are not interested in streaks and moved the Blue Jackets from -130 to -150 Friday night. Though the Rangers 2-10 record after a road win is of real concern, the Blueshirts have averaged 3.8 GAA in their last five outings, while Columbus as 13 scores in seven games. The Rangers are worth a look.
Betting Trend - 60% backing Columbus
Doug's Doc's Take - Lean New York
CBB - Saturday - (675) LSU at (676) ALABAMA 4:00 ET ESPN2
LSU enters the weekend in a three-way tie for first place in the SEC and they have a tough road assignment at Alabama. Both these teams can score, each averaging over 80 PPG and they have been known to have defensive lapses. Let's side with the Tigers up to -3 points since they are 7-1 SU in games determined by four points or fewer in the SEC this season.
Anticipated Line - LSU -1 to +1 point
Doug's Doc's Take - LSU covers (up to -3)
CBB - Saturday - (685) DELAWARE at (686) WILLIAM & MARY 4:00 ET YUR-VA
These two Colonial Conference clubs are chasing Hofstra, with Delaware in second place and William & Mary tied for third place. William & Mary in their last contest ended a three-game losing streak, but failed to cover and is on an 0-6 ATS stretch and is 1-7 against the college basketball odds. The Blue Hens are on a 7-0 SU stretch and exact revenge on the Tribe.
Anticipated Line - William & Mary +1 to -1 point
Doug's Doc's Take - Delaware covers
CBB - Saturday - (693) WEST VIRGINIA at (694) BAYLOR 4:00 ET ESPN+
You don't even need a calendar this time of year. If West Virginia had a sensational start and they start losing more than they are winning, it must be February. Off their off loss to Kansas this week, West Virginia is 2-3 and 1-4 ATS, slip-sliding away. No. 1 Baylor is definitely the better team in the skirmish, yet, is 3-3 ATS of late and 1-2 ATS when handing out double digits in this period. Consider going up to -10 on the Bears, just not beyond.
Anticipated Line - Baylor by -10 to -12 points
Doug's Doc's Take - Baylor covers (-10 or lower)
CBB - Saturday - (729) MARYLAND at (730) MICHIGAN STATE 6:00 ET ESPN
In the context of available talent, these Big Ten teams are equals. However, in game after game, Maryland consistently plays better and its best players come through regularly, something you cannot say about Michigan State's. If Penn State can win at East Lansing so can the Terrapins. Tough call and will need to see a number to make an exact choice for college basketball picks but would take the turtles at +3 or higher and Sparty at -1.5 or less.
Anticipated Line - Michigan State by -1 to -3 points
Doug's Doc's Take - Lean Maryland
CBB - Saturday - (741) HOUSTON at (742) SMU 6:00 ET ESPNU
Kelvin Sampson might be a lousy human being, yet, the dude can coach. Houston's young squad is playing tremendous basketball and continues to improve and again leads the AAC. The Cougars play stifling defense and their shooting percentage has picked up in recent contests. SMU has a good club at 17-6 SU and has the speed and general quickness to play with the Cougs. The Mustangs have to get to 70 points to have a shot in this affair. If the Ponies are at +4 or higher, worth a look.
Anticipated Line - Houston -3 to -5 points
Doug's Doc's Take - Lean SMU at +4 or higher
CBB - Sunday - (847) SAN DIEGO STATE at (848) BOISE STATE 4:00 ET CBSSN
Undefeated San Diego State places its 25-0 record on the line at Boise State. The Broncos are 12-1 and 10-2 ATS at home and average 83.7 PPG. This game comes down to three-point shooting. The Aztecs are Top 10 in three-point defense in the country and Boise State averages 8.5 three's a contest. If the Broncos make 11 3's, they cover with a chance for the upset and if they convert six or less, they are beaten by double digits. Recommend San Diego State at -5 or lower.
Anticipated Line - San Diego State by -5 to -7 points
Doug's Doc's Take - Lean San Diego State at -5 or lower
Public Consensus Record (2020) - 51% to 79% - 7-3 ATS
Public Consensus Record (2020) - 80% or Higher - 1-1 ATS
Line Movement Direction Record (2020) - 8-4 ATS
