When the Union of European Football (UEFA) Euro 2024 begins on June 14, it will become the second-most-watched soccer tournament in the world after the FIFA World Cup. The Euros are held every four years, like the World Cup and the Olympics later this summer. Germany has the privilege of being the host nation for this tournament.

The similarities between the World Cup and the Euros continue beyond just the frequency. The tournament field of 24 teams is set through qualifiers that each country must win. Once the field is set, the teams are broken into six groups of four, and a league format is used, where a team plays all of its opponents in the group. The top two teams in each group and the four with the next best records qualify for the knockout phase.

Top 5 Odds and Group of Death

Oddsmakers don't believe that the home-pitch advantage Germany will have throughout the tournament will be that much help, as they only have the 3rd-lowest odds to win the tourney at +550. England has been installed as the early favorites at +300, with the squad from France tailing close behind at +340. Spain and Portugal round out the top 5 with odds of +700 and +800, respectively.

Spain's group of Italy (+1600), Croatia (+4000), and Albania (+25000) has the distinction of being this tournament's "Group of Death," which is labeled as such because it's acknowledged as being the most difficult group to advance out of.

Teams to watch

Germany (A) +550 to win Euros/-250 to win group/-2000 to advance

The host squad got a very favorable group draw, which they are expected to dominate. Their real tournament begins when they reach the knockout stages, where they can be expected to find speedy counter-attacking teams, which is lacking in group play.

Italy (B) +1600 to win Euros/+195 to win group/-700 to advance

While Spain is the odds-on favorite to win the "Group of Death," if past Euros have shown us anything, it is to expect the unexpected. Italy has the pedigree of excellence, winning the tourney twice, including the Covid-delayed 2020 Euro, held in 2021.

England (C) +300 to win Euros/-250 to win group/ -3000 to advance

No one has an easier path to the knockout round than the English side. All that means is the favorites will be primed for an upset, as I don't believe England will prevail in the tourney.

Netherlands (D) +1600 to win Euros/+250 to win group/-450 to advance

Next to the Group of Death, Group D should be one of the more entertaining groups to watch. France has the second-lowest odds and the most exciting player of the tournament in Kylian Mbappe, but they always seem to find a way to choke, not winning the Euro since 2000.

Belgium (E) +1600 to win Euros/-250 to win group/-2000 to advance

If Belgium can stay focused, they can create a lot of noise with one of the best midfielders in the game (Kevin De Bruyne) and the prolific goal scorer Romelu Lukaku. However, that's a big if, as they have been prone to upset when not finishing the whole 90 minutes.

Georgia (F) +50000 to win Euros/+1400 to win group/+160 to advance

No, I haven't lost my mind and don't give the Georgians much chance to win the whole tourney. However, they possess La Liga's statistically best shot-stopper in Giorgi Mamardashvili and Serie A's breakout star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on offense. At +160 to advance, they represent excellent value. Sprinkle in a little to win the group at +1400, and you have the making of an excellent payday.
