2011 College Basketball Season Win Totals Odds
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 11/9/2011
Wagering on season win totals for college fans is no longer reserved just for the football season. For the upcoming college basketball season Caesars Palace has release college basketball season win totals odds for 24 teams.
Already wildly popular prop bets in the NFL, NBA, MLB and college football, the college basketball season win totals could become a trend among Las Vegas and online sportsbooks.
The one required and obvious difference about college basketball season win totals is the wager only pertains to conference games. With preseason tournaments creating the possibility of a team playing extra games, Caesars limited wagers to the more predictable conference slate of games.
The biggest difference about college basketball season win totals is also the biggest advantage for bettors and toughest task for the sportsbooks. Unlike any other season win total prop bets, college basketball bettors will have a chance to see teams perform in preseason tournaments and nonconference games before the season win totals come off the board when conference play begins in mid-December.
“The hardest part was trying to figure out how public perception would play a role in betting,” Caesars Entertainment senior race and sportsbook analyst Todd Fuhrman tells Doc’s Sports. “Bettors will be able to see 10-12 games of nonconference action before investing, so it’s going to be interesting to see how much weight they put on what they see in November and December.”
Nineteen of the 24 available teams to wager on hail from one of the six major conferences, but there are a few selections from smaller conference available for wagering at Caesars to appease the masses, including Harvard (12.5 wins). BYU (12.5), Memphis (13.5), UNLV (11.5) and Xavier (13.5).
The Big East conference is the best represented with six teams available for wagering, including conference favorite Connecticut (13 wins). Each Big East team plays an 18-game college basketball schedule. Louisville (11.5), Marquette (10.5), Notre Dame (8.5), Pitt (13) and Syracuse (13) are also available for wagering. Of all teams listed, Notre Dame has the lowest projected season win total.
“We tried to focus on some of the prestigious college basketball blue bloods,” Fuhrman said. “These are the high-profile schools with prominent fan bases…with the other goal to include a few mid-majors to mix things up for bettors.”
With the lines just posted this week there were no reports of early action, but Caesars says it will not hesitate to move the numbers accordingly as more action comes in.
“These numbers will be very fluid based on the action we see along with what our staff sees from the teams themselves,” Fuhrman said. “I do anticipate some tourist action coming in (early) while the professionals may wait a bit to jump into the fray.”
