2007 Fiesta Bowl Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 12/28/2006
Maybe it's because I'm a Michigan fan that is still disgusted by the thought of the Wolverines in the Rose Bowl, but the Fiesta Bowl is by far the New Year's Day game I am most looking forward to. Oklahoma opened as eight point favorites, but the spread has moved down to the key number of seven. People backing Oklahoma could use history to justify their decision - the Sooners are 9-3-1 against the spread. Boise State struggled to overcome the inflated expectations of bettors - the undefeated team was just 5-5-1 ATS.

2007 Gator Bowl Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 12/28/2006
If you believe the picture that the oddsmakers are painting then this isn't going to be much of a game. West Virginia opened as one-touchdown favorites, and the support of a large majority of bettors has seen that spread jump up to 11. It could be even more by game time. The Yellow Jackets aren't feeling a lot of love. The question is whether people will regret that by the end of the game. Neither team has been particularly kind to bettors. Georgia Tech is 6-5-1 against the spread, while the Mountaineers are 5-5-1.

2007 Cotton Bowl Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 12/27/2006
True college football historians will be excited about this pairing - a rematch of the 1964 Orange Bowl. Nebraska won that game, 13-7, to claim the National Championship. Though the stakes aren't nearly as high this time around, the same defensive showing is certainly a strong possibility.

2007 Capital One Bowl Preview
by Jordan Adams - 12/27/2006
This year in Orlando we'll see two of the premier rushing attacks when the No. 7 Wisconsin Badgers face the No. 8 Arkansas Razorbacks on the Jan. 1. Both teams have prolific runners but they each employ a different style. Arkansas's charge is led by sophomore sensation Darren McFadden while freshman dynamo P.J Hill thunders ahead for Wisky.

2006 Sun Bowl Preview
by Jordan Adams - 12/26/2006
The Missouri Tigers were off to an excellent 6-0 start to the college football season and no quarterback looked better than Sophomore Chase Daniel. Then the reality of the Big 12 schedule kicked in and the Tigers dropped four of their last six games to finish 8-4. Opposing them is a team headed in the opposite direction. Oregon State has won seven of its last eight games, knocking off the likes of USC, Hawaii and Oregon along the way. The Beavers are aiming for a strong ending to this late run, while Mizzou looks to rebound from its struggles and finish the season with a positive ending.

2006 Holiday Bowl Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 12/23/2006
The 2006 Holiday Bowl is a showdown between teams with seasons that are virtually a mirror image of each other. Both teams bounced back from a disappointing loss in September to string together some wins and get national attention before faltering down the stretch. The difference is that Cal came into the season with legitimate BCS aspirations while Texas A&M exceeded even the most ambitious of expectations.

2006 Emerald Bowl Preview
by Jordan Adams - 12/23/2006
Every year Florida State has a say in the ACC title race. Well, not this year. It was a very surprising and disappointing year for Bobby Bowden's team. They finished the season at 6-6 and were below the program's usual standards, to say the least. That is all history and a new beginning starts on Wednesday with a chance to end the year on a positive note. These Seminoles will play UCLA, a team that also struggled this year but one that is coming off the win of a lifetime, denying USC the national title game.

Conference Strength Key in Bowl Game Handicapping
by Robert Ferringo - 12/21/2006
Never try to stiff a working girl in San Juan - she knows what real American money looks like. Never try to convince a cop that it wasn't yours - you'll look less foolish when you show up on "Cops". Never lie to your mother or mother-in-law - they're women, they know.

2006 Hawaii Bowl Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 12/21/2006
If you're not out with friends or family on Christmas Eve, then you should tune into ESPN to catch this one, if only to get a chance to watch the Hawaii offense. Quarterback Colt Brennan leads a squad that was the best in the country this year, averaging 47.3 points and 549.9 yards per game. Brennan threw for truly ridiculous numbers - 4,990 yards and 53 touchdowns. Thanks to those fireworks, and because they have the obvious home turf advantage, Hawaii was installed as a 10-point favorite. Despite the fact that almost two-thirds of bets placed have been on Hawaii, that point spread has fallen to as low as 6.5, indicating that some sharp action is likely on Arizona State.

2006 Las Vegas Bowl Preview
by Jordan Adams - 12/19/2006
In September the talk of the Mountain West Conference was all about defending champs TCU, and many were also focused on Utah. However, it's December and one of the true surprises and offensive juggernauts of the 2006 college football season has been the BYU Cougars. They come into their bowl game at 10-2 and face an Oregon team that has faded late in the season.

Bowl Capping Different Than Regular Season
by Robert Ferringo - 12/06/2006
While the current system may be shakier than a Middle East cease-fire, college football is a unique animal in the gambling world precisely because of its peculiar postseason. The holiday bowl season offers a month-long orgy of marketing and violence unrivaled by anything on the sports calendar. It's the optimum occasion to fleece your co-workers into sucker bets on their alma maters. And if there's a better cure for a New Year's hangover than a backdoor cover, I haven't found it.

Coaching Changes for Bowl Games
by Trevor Whenham - 12/01/2006
The end of the regular season in college football means several things. Conferences grab cash with championship games, seniors from losing teams say goodbye to college, top juniors decide whether they are going pro and coaches get fired or bolt for greener pastures. This year the coaching carousel is already spinning as quickly and as unexpectedly as it ever has.

Conference Championship Betting Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 11/30/2006
If you're a hardcore college football fan you probably either believe that every conference should have a conference championship game, or that they are just a silly cash grab. I fit myself into the latter group. I don't think that they prove a lot, and I think that they can do more to damage to a team than they are worth. A win for Florida this weekend, for example, won't do much to help their chances of making the national championship game (they probably aren't going no matter what), but a loss would end their chances once and for all.

by Joshua Fairbanks - 11/29/2006
This is the week in college football where we separate the men from the boys. In this meeting, the SEC championship is up for grabs between No. 8 Arkansas and No.4 Florida. Will this be the game that Florida can show the BCS they deserve a title shot? Or is it time for Arkansas to finish their Cinderella SEC season? Riding Mid-Major Streaks
by Trevor Whenham - 11/16/2006

Fourth Down and Inches
by Doc - 11/15/2006
Our "College Game of the Year", Arkansas -5 ½ over Tennessee, won as expected, with the Razorbacks crushing the Vols, 31-14. The Hogs rushing attack was outstanding, having no problems against the Volunteers suspect defense. These are the type of games that I love to release, no doubt, and you can light up a cigar because the game was over by halftime.

CBB Season Starts With Some Big Games
by Trevor Whenham - 11/14/2006
The wait is over, and college basketball has finally begun. Some people may argue that you have to wait until conference play starts, or at least until teams have several games under their belts, to make watching it interesting. If you think that, however, you are missing out on some potentially classic games that are scheduled for right at the start of the season.

Our selection service turned in another outstanding weekend in football, picking up +14 units and going 7-1 in college. Unfortunately we lost our top selection, Duke, 38-13, to Navy. Hot Maryland Faces Miami
by Joshua Fairbanks - 11/08/2006
Week 10 in college football presented a strong match-up within the ACC. This game found the Maryland Terrapins meeting the Clemson Tigers fighting for a spot atop the ACC standings. The Terrapins came into this game as a staggering 20-point underdog. Obviously, sport books assumed that the Clemson offense would erupt and run away with the game behind running back James Davis. After all the dust cleared, the Maryland Terrapins truly made a statement to remember.

The Big Ten Conference has become a two-team race and we are now just one week away from the dream match-up between Michigan and Ohio State. Ferringo College Report: Joe Pa Takes a Tumble
by Robert Ferringo - 11/07/2006
Pretty nondescript weekend in college football, eh? Thursday doesn't count towards the weekend, lads. Yeah, the Big East may have been decided, the Big Two had minor scares, and some old guy got mugged on the Penn State sideline. Oh, wait. That was Joe Pa. My bad. But I will say that had to be the most unintentionally funny moment involving a senior citizen and a collision since Bob Dole lost his battle with gravity in California in 1996.

The Rise and Fall of the Big East
by Joshua Fairbanks - 11/03/2006
Many sports fans turned their attention this week to a huge match-up between West Virginia and Louisville. Everyone's expectations were high for this game and the results lived up to the hype. The game could have been much closer, of course, if sure-handed running back Steve Slaton could have held onto the ball. Never-the-less, this game is probably going to go down as the pinnacle game for the Big East this year and quite possibly the biggest game in division history.

Fourth Down and Inches
by Doc - 11/01/2006
Our college selections continued to roll, as we went 6-3, +13 units. Of the three losses, the one that I was most disappointed in was Miami (FL). I truly thought the Hurricanes were ready, as my source indicated a great week of practice and a positive morale surrounding the team. Miami is back at the Orange Bowl this weekend hosting Virginia Tech. The game used to feature the best of what the Big East had to offer, but both have struggled to perform well this year.

Michigan-Ohio State Expected to be One of Heaviest Bet Games of Season
by Trevor Whenham - 10/26/2006
I've been a diehard Michigan fan for about 25 years now, which is a fairly odd thing for a guy who grew up in western Canada. It all started when my mom bought me a Michigan sweatshirt when I was a young kid. She only bought it because I would only wear blue at the time, but the colors seeped into my bloodstream and I have been hooked ever since.

Ferringo College Report: Miami, FSU not Only Florida Teams in Trouble

Well, I had my College Game of the Month going this weekend and was treated to three-plus hours of frustration, angst and general feelings of dread. I took Missouri laying just a couple of points at home against a ho-hum Oklahoma team. The Tigers proceeded to lay a fantastic egg, losing 26-10 in front of 60,000 disappointed fans.

Missouri Shows Us Its...Sports
by Robert Ferringo - 10/30/2006
Lately it seems like our nation's 24th state has been in the spotlight 24/7. No quarter was asked for, and none given, as gamblers were sucked into the fray for a trio of significant sporting events.

Our "Big Ten Game of the Year" hit the win column as the Michigan Wolverines (-13), took down Iowa, 20-6. It seems nothing ever comes easy and this game was no different. I decided to pull the trigger later Tuesday after my No. 1 scout in Iowa felt QB Tate would not be close to being 100 percent.

CFB: Can One-Loss Teams Reach the Title Game?
by Trevor Whenham - 10/24/2006
The college national championship game is still more than two months away, but it's never too soon to speculate on who is going to be there. Players Getting Arrested: What is the Impact on Their Teams?
by Trevor Whenham - 10/19/2006
Oklahoma Sooners starting linebacker Rufus Alexander was arrested early on Sunday morning and charged with disturbing the peace and interfering with official process. The story is that someone stepped in front of the car that Alexander was riding in. The driver of the car, Alexander's friend, got out to confront the pedestrian and Alexander stepped in to stop the situation from getting out of hand. Alexander is a legitimate NFL prospect and the team's leading tackler. Last time out, against Iowa State, Alexander had nine tackles and an acrobatic interception.

What the Loss of Adrian Peterson Means to the Sooners
by Trevor Whenham - 10/18/2006
The Oklahoma Sooners haven't exactly had fate smiling on them this year. They lost quarterback Rhett Bomar just before the season started because of his stupidity, then got knocked from the ranks of the undefeated by Oregon in what was quite possibly the worst case of officiating college football has seen this decade. Or longer. On top of that, Sooners' fans had to put up with another loss against hated Texas.

Big East Deserves Major Respect
by Trevor Whenham - 10/18/2006
It has become popular recently in the media to kick on the Big East conference. There is a strong and seemingly growing opinion that a one-loss SEC team would be more deserving of a spot in the National Championship Game than an undefeated Big East squad. That may be true (though teams like Florida and Auburn need to find some consistency to make that argument relevant), but the Big East deserves more credit than it's getting.

To Bet or Not to Bet: Boise State Football
by Trevor Whenham - 10/18/2006
The media and college football powers do everything in their power to give mid-majors the impression that they aren't welcome in the BCS, but those pesky upstarts still insist on trying to break into the exclusive club. Only one team from outside a major conference has made a BCS bowl. That was in 2004 when Utah couldn't be ignored. That journey made Urban Meyer and Alex Smith very rich men, but it also set the bar that all other mid-major powerhouses now aim for.

Ferringo College Report: Oklahoma in Trouble After Peterson Injury
by Robert Ferringo - 10/17/2006
To me - not to sound like some WE-watching, Oprah-loving woman - the most heart-breaking story of the weekend was the Adrian Peterson injury. The guy was playing in front of his father for the first time ever in college - even though his father is a felon and drug dealer - and he broke his collarbone scoring his second TD in garbage time of their 34-9 victory over Iowa State. Miami TKO's FIU To Earn Well-Deserved Cover

Last week our Revenge Game of the Year rolled, as South Florida (-6), destroyed Connecticut by a score of 38-16. As the midpoint of conference play approaches, the Big Ten clearly appears to be separated into two tiers. Four of the six games last week were routs, including the nation's No. 1 team, Ohio State, taking care of in-state mid-major Bowling Green by a score of 35-7 at the Horseshoe.

Is There a QB Controversy in Florida?
by Trevor Whenham - 10/06/2006
The quarterbacking situation in Florida is one of the more interesting things to watch on the college football landscape this year. You have a senior in Chris Leak that has led his team to a 5-0 record, and is putting up numbers that legitimately have him in the Heisman conversation.

Fourth Down and Inches
by Doc - 10/05/2006
Our sports service turned in a nice performance this past week while picking up 18 units. All three of our 5-unit selections won (Kentucky, Cincinnati and Baltimore) despite being involved in close contests. The big disappointment of the weekend had to be Notre Dame (-14) over Purdue. This Irish pushed with their 35-21 victory.

How Rachel McAdams and Jessica Alba Relate To College Football
by Robert Ferringo - 10/03/2006
My favorite fan poster of the weekend was one I saw at Iowa behind the College Gameday set. The sign read: "I skipped my sister's wedding to come to the Game of the Year! Sorry Jill." That's classic. But it was another sign in that same crowd that really peaked my interest. A kid in Florida Gators colors held one and it read: "Give Tebow The Heisman!"

Patience When Waiting for Lines Pays Off
by Trevor Whenham - 09/28/2006
What do Michigan, Texas and Notre Dame have in common? Besides being Top 15 teams, I mean. A bet on any of these three teams didn't pay off last weekend. Texas didn't cover, and Michigan and Notre Dame were pushes. How about the Bears, Jacksonville and Panthers? Besides having good defenses, all three of those teams didn't cash a ticket, either, because none of them covered.

Ohio State-Iowa Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 09/28/2006
We're in the dog days of conference play in college football. Many of the top teams are playing foes that shouldn't be too much of a concern. Schedule makers seem to put all the games that are likely to be good ones on the same weekends, leaving weekends like this one with very few compelling match-ups between top teams looking to stake a claim on the national title, or even a conference crown.

Young Players Who Could Eye Heisman Trophy in 2008

The Heisman race this year, and every year, is full of juniors and seniors, so it only makes sense that the young players with jaw-dropping skill this year will be making their claim for the award in two years or so.

Is Michigan Worth a Bet?
by Trevor Whenham - 09/21/2006
I'm as much of a Michigan fan as a guy can be, but even I had no idea that we were going to see the Wolverines completely dismantle and embarrass Notre Dame on Saturday. Like many people, considering that the line fell from -7.5 to -4.5, I was fairly confident that the Wolverines would cover the spread, and even hopeful that they would be able to win. But I certainly wasn't expecting the 26-point destruction that we saw.

2006 Louisville Football - The Impact of the Michael Bush Injury

Until last Saturday, that is.

Rule Changes in College Football
by Allen Eastman - 09/08/2006
College football has begun with a couple rule changes, one of which could significantly affect your handicapping strategy. The clock now starts the instant the ball is kicked off instead of when the receiving team touches it, which should have little effect on the outcomes. The big rule change concerns the clock starting when the referee spots the ball on change of possessions as opposed to when the ball is snapped.

The Impact of College Rule Changes

When the college football season kicks off tonight, the games will look different. Fourth Down and Inches

The word "if" is probably the most common word used by handicappers. If that had happened or if it was not for that fumble, such and such would have won. That was certainly the case with our, "Big Ten Game of the Year," as plenty of ifs caused this game to go into the books as a loss. The biggest probably came in the first half with Wisconsin up 7-0 with a third-and-one on the Iowa 3-yard line.

Bet for Value: Fade This
by Chris, the Impaler - 10/14/2005
In this week's installment of how the college football bounces, we need to discuss something all handicappers hate to talk about; the fade. Chronic bettors know that gambling is a streaky business. The sad fact about sports investment is that once and a while you lose.
