2015 Breeders' Cup Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 10/29/2015
It was a big blow to Breeders' Cup weekend on Thursday morning when Beholder was scratched from the Classic. That's only one race out of 13, though, and it still promises to be a thriller even without the great mare. That disappointment aside, we are very close to the start of two great days of racing action. That means that it is time to make my annual Breeders' Cup predictions. I'm not talking about picking winners in all the races. These are bigger-picture pronouncements:
2015 Breeders' Cup Top Prop Bet Picks for Head-to-Head Matchups
by Dave Schwab - 10/28/2015
BetOnline will release a full set of betting odds for each and every race of this two-day horse betting extravaganza, but to really dial up the excitement it has already posted a number of prop bet odds for head-to-head matchups in several of the key races on Keeneland's two-day card. I have narrowed my top prop bet picks for these matchups down to the following three.
Breeders' Cup Long Shots with Betting Value for Underdog Profits
by Trevor Whenham - 10/27/2015
The title here is simple and explains it all - these are horses in the Breeders' Cup this year that offer value at their double-digit morning line odds. Some of these horses stretch the definition of long shots, and none this year are true out-of-the-cloud bombs, but they all promise to deliver at least $20 of profit on a $2 bet. There are seven on the list this year, so just one winner would produce a nice return on investment. Without further ado:
Breeders' Cup Betting Advice 2015: Horses to Watch
by Trevor Whenham - 10/27/2015
Every year when I go over the Breeders' Cup races I split the fields into groups. There are the horses that I easily and quickly dismiss - never to think of again. There are the obvious contenders that I know I will work into your bets somehow. There are the fringe contenders that will require more thought and consideration. Then there is another group - the horses I know I should pass on but I just can't. For some reason - their story, what they have shown in the past, bizarre circumstances or ridiculous coincidence - sticks with me, and I just can't dismiss them.
Handicapping the 2015 Breeders' Cup Jockeys
by Trevor Whenham - 10/27/2015
There is no single thing that can make a bigger difference to the performance of a horse than the jockey. A good jockey can make a decent horse a winner and a great horse unbeatable - especially if there is chemistry between horse and rider. A bad jockey, or even just an unsuited or unprepared one, can burn up bettor's money in no time flat. Bettors often curse jockeys, but you have to respect them, too - what they do is pretty much insane. As we get ready for the Breeders' Cup this year, here are eight of the more interesting jockey storylines:
2015 Breeders' Cup Handicapping Advice: the Trainers
by Trevor Whenham - 10/27/2015
The horses do the work, and the jockeys keep them out of trouble. The trainers are the ones that have to get the horses to the starting line and worry about every single thing along the way. It's a tough gig - you get the glory when you win, but more often you get the blame. As we get ready for the Breeders' Cup, it's always interesting to look at the long list of trainers with horses entered to pick out the most interesting storylines. Here are eight that stand out this year:
2015 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Picks and Predictions with Opening Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/27/2015
The Juvenile Fillies race at the Breeders' Cup doesn't get nearly as much attention as some of the bigger races, but I just love it. Two-year-old colts are insane - they don't know what they are doing, and their races are often chaotic. Two-year-old fillies, on the other hand, are just little ladies. They race smarter and often more predictably. We have seen some truly great fillies win this race over the years. There are several horses in this field that could join those greats, but we have the chance to watch the birth of a true superstar if the favorite performs as truly expected. Here are the highlights of this intriguing 10-horse field:
2015 Breeders' Cup Sprint Picks and Predictions with Opening Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/27/2015
I love handicapping the Breeders' Cup Sprint for one reason above all others each year - it's good to be humbled every once in awhile. This race certainly has the power to humble handicappers - bizarre, unpredictable results, strange layoffs, big prices. The only thing certain about the Sprint is that nothing is certain. It is almost always the dartboard race of the card - as in, put all the names on a dartboard and see what you hit.
2015 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Picks and Predictions with Opening Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/27/2015
Outside of the Classic there isn't a race I look forward to at the Breeders' Cup each year than the Juvenile. While the winner only rarely factors into the Kentucky Derby, this is nonetheless the best chance we have had so far to see which two year olds are the best when matched up against each other. It starts the long process of dreaming about the Kentucky Derby. Unfortunately, for handicappers it can be a nightmare.
2015 Breeders' Cup Classic Picks and Predictions with Opening Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/26/2015
This race is always a highlight of the racing calendar. This year, though, it is different - the race we have been looking forward to since pretty much the moment that American Pharoah crossed the finish line in the Belmont Stakes. It lacks some horses like Shared Belief and California Chrome that we'd love to see, but make no mistake - this is a gem of a race. Or at least it should be.
2015 Breeders' Cup Mile Picks and Predictions with Opening Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/26/2015
We only really, truly care about one-mile races on the Turf one day each year in North America. It's a shame, too, because this is regularly one of the most exciting and challenging races on the Breeders' Cup card. It's also a race that creates dynasties - Miesque and Lure each won it twice in a row, Da Hoss took two in three years, the great Goldikova won three straight, then two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan won two in a row in 2012 and 2013.
2015 Breeders' Cup Turf Picks and Predictions with Opening Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/26/2015
I attended my first Breeders' Cup in 1997 at Hollywood Park. It was an epic event, with wins by greats like eventual Horse of the Year Favorite Trick in the Juvenile and Skip Away in the Classic. As a Canadian, though, my highlight that year - and perhaps my all-time Cup favorite moment - was when Canadian-bred-and-based Chief Bearheart won the Turf with a monstrous stretch drive. It was a proud moment for Canadians and a nice win for North Americans - 18 of the 31 editions of this race have been won by European invaders.
2015 Breeders' Cup Distaff Picks and Predictions with Opening Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/26/2015
All of these fillies and mares are thankful of one thing above all else -- that super freak mare Beholder is sticking with the plan to run in the Classic and not going for another win in the Distaff to add to the one she got in 2013. If she was here she would win this race -- simple as that. With her gone it's a more wide-open and compelling race. Here's how the cream of this fairly deep crop sets up this year:
Horses that can win the 2015 Breeders' Cup Classic
by Trevor Whenham - 10/23/2015
Pre-entries are in, and we have a pretty good idea of what the field will look like for the Breeders' Cup Classic on Halloween day at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky. We now know that 10 horses have been entered in the Classic and that there is a good chance that all 10 will enter the gate and try to win this thing. But, of course, only one can emerge victorious.
American Pharoah Picks and Predictions for 2015 Breeders' Cup Classic
by Trevor Whenham - 10/23/2015
We have absolutely no way of knowing how a Triple Crown winner will fare in the Breeders' Cup Classic for one big reason - no horse has been able to try it before. So, we enter uncharted territory as American Pharoah prepares to run for the last time. He already has his place in racing history secured. With a win here he would ascend to the levels of the immortal legends. It won't be easy, though - he's facing a strong field, being asked to do some things for the first time, and is at the end of a long and grueling year.
Beholder Picks and Predictions for 2015 Breeders' Cup Classic
by Trevor Whenham - 10/23/2015
The Breeders' Cup Classic is, according to the storybooks, supposed to be the crowning glory for a historic year. American Pharoah is the first Triple Crown winner to ever have a chance to win a Breeders' Cup race, and it will be his final race. In a Disney movie he would always win. He has to win against a pretty deep field, though. He also has to beat a truly special horse in Beholder. She's not just good - she's a living legend. So, can Beholder win the Breeders' Cup Classic? Here are nine factors to consider as you wrestle with that question:
Breeders' Cup 2015 Betting: Pick Six Wagering Advice
by Trevor Whenham - 10/23/2015
We now know who is entered in the Breeders' Cup. This is when things get serious. Here's the thing about people - they like getting rich. Or, more accurately, they like to dream about getting rich. That's why every year at the Breeders' Cup the pick six gets so much attention. Picking winners of six races in a row doesn't sound too hard, and the payoff is often hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. Patiently and slowly growing your bankroll sounds like it's for suckers when you could make one big splash.
2013 Breeders’ Cup Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 10/29/2013
The Breeders’ Cup, the best two-day festival of sports excess there is, is now just days away. The cards are set, most the horses are at the track, and all we can do is wait and try to figure out what is going to happen. The last of my handicapping won’t be finished until post time, but at this point I am happy to make these five 2013 Breeders’ Cup predictions:
2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic Predictions and Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/29/2013
This is shaping up to be a great Breeders’ Cup Classic. The field is deep and interesting, and there is no clear, obvious winner. Anything could happen, and that’s what makes handicapping so exciting. It’s going to be a thrilling 12-horse race, but the winner is very likely to come from these nine contenders. Here are some 2013 Breeders’ Cup predictions for those nine horses with morning line betting odds:
