Mora Edges Manfredo Again by Jeremy "Fasttalker" Bjornberg - 10/17/2005 ![]() Hometown hero Sergio Mora successfully defended his Contender crown by narrowly out pointing Peter Manfredo Jr. I had picked Manfredo to win and I feel like he did pull it out on the scorecards, but the shoddy refereeing disagreed. ![]() Mora got a huge cut over his eye in round two but gamely fought on, even landing the more telling blows down the stretch. Sergio Mora seems to really have a lot of competitive fire in him, reminding me of local California fighter Fernando Vargas. I wouldn't mind seeing Sergio Mora fight Manfredo again. The undercard featured an interesting match-up between my fellow hometown fighter Anthony Bonsante and Jesse Brinkley. Bonsante dominated the first fight but was then KOed by a vicious uppercut in the fifth and final round. The rematch wasn't much different, as Bonsante easily outboxed Brinkley the first four rounds. Brinkley should really be ashamed as his laziness has led to his downfall. Brinkley was out of shape and didn't seem to care. Brinkley did land a few nice shots in the final round, but he should have lost the fight by four rounds. The judges were absolutely blind to award the fight to Brinkley. Hopefully Bonsante will get a shot at the rematch. The producers from the Contender are now touring the U.S. looking for talent for next season. The show didn't do the best in the ratings, but it wasn't because of the quality of fighters. All the middleweights had talent, the show just focused too much on marriages and kids. I sincerely hope ESPN focuses more on the fights. There isn't much the next few weeks for boxing. FSN will show the return of Hector Camacho Jr. and Vernon Forrest on Friday in meaningless bouts. The same night there is a boring PPV featuring David Tua against Cisse Salif and Jameel McCline will also be fighting. The best fight of the night might end up being Daniel Judah and Eric Harding, but it won't be televised. Don't miss out next week as we will take a look at a few of the PPV fights coming, including Jermain Taylor and Bernard Hopkins.
