Oscar De La Hoya's Play to be the Next Don King by Jeremy "Fasttalker" Bjornberg - 11/17/2005 ![]() Although Oscar De La Hoya made boatloads of money for all of boxing he never really paid off for the gamblers. Oscar blew it against Trinidad and Mosley twice in fights he was heavily favored to win. De La Hoya was a huge favorite to Trinidad considering both were undefeated, the lines were around +185 for him on fight night. As the story has been told too many times to count, I will just briefly say he ran the last four rounds and gave up a sure win. Oscar then was out hustled by the smaller Shane Mosley in a great fight at the Staples Center. Oscar definitely had a great career and he will be rewarded with a spot in the Hall of Fame but some critics say he managed to underachieve. Oscar was never able to step up in the face of heavy challenges. Oscar last fought against Bernard Hopkins in a lame performance motivated by greed. Oscar did alright but when the going got tough he took a knee from a fairly hard body shot. It is tough to say that Oscar took a dive but it was far from a brave performance and it didn't help his credibility with any of the hardcore fans or the Mexican contingent. I correctly picked both Mosley fights, as well as the Trinidad and Hopkins fights. I did pick Ike Quartey as well and although he lost a razor-close decision, I did feel he pulled it out. Oscar never won a fight that he was an underdog in, which is slightly skewed because he was really only an underdog against Hopkins. Oscar has always been in charge of his business affairs more than most fighters, but now he is building a conglomerate. Oscar now has moved more into the role of promoter and if the beginning is any indication, Oscar is going to be a much better promoter than fighter. Oscar signed established stars like Marco Antonio Barrera, Shane Mosley and Bernard Hopkins to work and fight for his company, Golden Boy Promotions. De La Hoya also signed many of the brightest stars in boxing including Abner Mares, Fernando Montiel, Demetrius Hopkins and Rock Allen. As a gambler, I am excited to also make a lot of coin off of his future champions. Oscar built himself a very impressive empire from top to bottom. De La Hoya has a lot planned for the near future. He will be promoting the upcoming rematch between Jermain Taylor and Bernard Hopkins on Dec. 3. On Feb. 25 Oscar will promote the battle of California between Shane Mosley and Fernando Vargas. De La Hoya also brings a Barrera vs. Jesus Chavez fight on March 25. Oscar De La Hoya may be a powerful promoter but he will also make an appearance as a fighter around Cinco De Mayo against wildman Ricardo Mayorga. Mayorga should present a very entertaining fight as well and it gives Oscar a title shot and a fantastic HBO PPV date. It is sure to be another financially huge year for Oscar both in and out of the ring.
