On Saturday night Pomona native Shane Mosley (42-4, 36 KOs) regained his Sugar by out slugging Oxnard native Ferocious Fernando Vargas (26-3, 22 KOs) until referee Joe Cortez was forced to stop the contest due to the huge welt above the left eye of Vargas. Although the initial reaction to the match-up was hardly awe inspiring, the end result made it all worth it. The fans definitely showed up and made their presence known as each fighters' faithful were trading cheers back and forth almost as much as the men in the ring. This was not a Fight of the Year candidate, but was still a success for everyone involved. Doc's took full advantage and picked Mosley to win, although a stoppage was a bit surprising.
The fight started out at a fast pace, as each fighter was more than willing to exchange. Mosley was able to loop a few right hands that landed cleanly, one of which ended up causing all the swelling on Fernando's eye. Both fighters landed heavy blows but Mosley definitely won round 1. The 2nd round was another action-packed three minutes as both fighters had their moments, but Mosley punctuated the round with a couple of hard combinations. Shane continued to target the left eye of Vargas with hard rights and looping crosses. Although he was up three rounds, it wasn't as if Fernando wasn't having his moments. He continued to march forward and walk Mosley down and finally won a round on my scorecard in round 4. The swelling above the eye of Vargas was starting to get bigger but nonetheless he still won round 5 by out-muscling Shane. The proud Mexican was seemingly wearing Mosley down and the fight was even after a dominant round 6 for Vargas.
Mosley must have recognized the fight was pretty even because he started out round 7 with a lot of urgency. He stopped backing up and went toe to toe despite his mouth being open, a sign of possible tiring. He got the better of Vargas to take a 4-3 lead on my scorecard. Rounds 8 and 9 were more of the same, Mosley nailing Vargas right on his swelled eye. The eye was closed and Fernando was doing his best, but the eye was limiting his vision and causing him to get caught with loads of right hands. After round 9 the doctor, referee and Vegas boxing honcho Marc Ratner, gathered on the ropes and seemed to almost stop the fight due to the lump on Vargas. As close as it looked to being stopped it was not to be. The 10th round started and Mosley attacked the grotesque eye. The ref was unable to watch anymore and stopped the fight. Vargas was obviously disappointed in the result and definitely deserves a rematch. Mosley wants to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. but the smart thing to do is sign off for another huge PPV battle with Fernando.
I definitely did not think too much of the undercard, and other than a few moments it was disappointing. Unbeaten heavyweight prospect Calvin Brock (28-0, 22 KOs) looked pudgy but ended up with a highlight reel knockout when he threw a left hook at the end of round 6 to discombobulate Zuri Lawrence (20-11-4, O KOs). The win should only help his rise to a title shot and a big payday. Although he helped his cause, it should be noted that Brock's team had such a lack of confidence they put him in with an opponent who hadn't KO'd anyone in 35 fights.
The star of the undercard was slugger Joel Julio (27-0, 24 KOs), who took on quitter Wilmer Mejia (11-11-1). Julio floored Mejia in both the first and second rounds, after which Mejia cried of a hand injury and the fight was stopped. Julio is in the mold of a Julian Jackson, he just keeps coming forward with power shots. He is obviously ready for a step up in competition. The other televised fight was faded ex-champion Mark Johnson (44-5, 28 KOs) challenging WBO 118 lb. champ Jhonny Gonzalez (32-4, 28 KOs). The fight was supposed to be for the title but Johnson was unable to make weight. Gonzalez dominated the fight until he stopped him in the 8th round. It is obviously time for Mark to retire.
March 4 will be a huge weekend for boxing again as Super Middleweight Champions Joe Calzaghe (40-0, 31 KOs) takes on Jeff Lacy (21-0, 17 KOs) in a unification bout on Showtime. Doc's has found the winning angle on this match and will continue our winning ways with another Undisputed pick. We will also be giving away a pick on the HBO match the same night between Miguel Cotto (25-0, 21 KOs) and Gianluca Branco (36-1-1, 19 KOs). Doc's Sports will be doing a detailed analysis of this WBO Junior Welterweight battle as well.
