Mitchell Unable to May"weather" the Storm by Jeremy "Fasttalker" Bjornberg - 11/21/2005 Longtime Jr. Welterweight champion Sharmba Mitchell was outclassed easily by the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Floyd was simply too fast, too smart and too strong for the shot ex-champion. Mayweather was making his first foray into the welterweight division and he viewed Mitchell as a good opponent because of his similarities to the Undisputed champion Zab Judah. Mayweather and Judah have been involved in a war of words that is sure to lead to a mega fight sometime soon. Judah is not even comparable in a marketing sense, but he does have the skills to win any fight he chooses. As usual, Doc's was right on the money with their call. We picked Floyd to KO, and the under on rounds and surprisingly it was a fantastic play. The oddsmakers should have realized Mitchell would not last even close to the 10.5 over/under. Simply put, the only fighters that have a chance to beat Floyd south of 147 are Ricky Hatton, Antonio Margarito and Zab Judah. Floyd would still be a heavy favorite in each matchup but all would definitely be competitive. Floyd dominated Mitchell from the very beginning, showing no respect for the former champion. Mayweather was not affected by the weight because Mitchell is not a puncher and is also not a natural welterweight himself. Mayweather dropped Sharmba in round three with a textbook right hand. Floyd then proceeded to catch Mitchell at will with every punch in the book. It truly was another exhibition for the talented star. Mitchell was finally stopped with a right hand to the solar plexus that had him gasping for air. As always Richard Steele stopped the fight prematurely but it didn't matter since it was going to be over soon and may have saved Mitchell some brain damage. The only factor that did seem to be a potential problem down the road was the fact that Floyd only put on one official pound after the weigh in. The lack of true size at welter might not matter against Mitchell but against a bully like Antonio Margarito it could be an advantage that could be exposed. Doc's will be analyzing the upcoming rematch between middleweight champion Jermain Taylor and legend Bernard Hopkins. Taylor won the first fight controversially and this is going to possibly the hardest fight of the year to call. They will face off Dec. 3 on HBO Pay per view. In other boxing news Joe Calzaghe has finally, after over 10 years in the game, taken a meaningful fight. Calzaghe will take on young bull Jeff Lacy in England on March 4. This fight has what it takes to put the Super Middleweight division back on the map. It will be interesting to see who the favorite in this fight is, as it will definitely be hotly contested and could possibly offer some fantastic lines.
