More Gold at the End of the Rainbow - De La Hoya/Mayorga Recap
by Jeremy "Fasttalker" Bjornberg - 05/10/2006
Ricardo Mayorga (28-6-1, 23 KOs) finally got what he had coming to him after he did nothing but fling childish insults at Oscar De La Hoya (38-4, 30 KOs). The Golden Boy responded by pounding Mayorga from pillar to pillar. The cocky cigarette smoking drunk had nothing to offer but a big mouth. Doc's picked Oscar to KO and we also felt that heavy action was warranted. Ricardo simply has no boxing talent and he was going against one of the premier talents of the last 20 years. De La Hoya couldn't miss and he was hardly hit all night by the sloppy titleholder. Mayorga was dropped in round one and brutally finished off in round six. The performance was definitely what Oscar needed to regain his rep. I usually criticize Oscar so I don't want to stop now. Felix Trinidad left Mayorga's chin in shambles. There is no way he would have went down in round one if Tito hadn't damaged all the nerve endings left in his jaw with a blistering KO that also took the heart and soul out of Mayorga.
Oscar now has an endless supply of opponents and an even bigger supply of money. The Golden Boy cited Antonio Margarito (33-4 24 KOs), Floyd Mayweather (36-0, 24 KOs) and Ricky Hatton as possible opponents for his HBO held date of Sept. 16. Oscar is definitely not serious about fighting Margarito, but the other two mentioned could bring upwards of $30 million! Hatton would bring a huge British contingency and Floyd is the No. 1 Pound-for-Pound fighter in the sport and the back-story that his dad trains Oscar makes it a soap opera as well.
This coming weekend brings an interesting match-up between two of the best formerly at 140. Luis Collazo vs. Ricky Hatton is taking place this Saturday in Boston as a live introduction to the American fans to see the top ranked fighter in Britain. Ring Magazine 140 lb. Champ Ricky Hatton (40-0, 30 KOs) is looking to add a title at 147 and give himself a better position in negotiations with some of the other top fighters. Luis Collazo (26-1, 12 KOs) surprised many when he outboxed Jose Rivera (38-4-1, 24 KOs) at Madison Square Garden. The fight will definitely be interesting because it is classic slugger vs. boxer. Collazo is a Puerto Rican from New York, so he should have enough fans to make the crowd seem somewhat even. Four thousand Brits are allegedly coming so Hatton very well could be the crowd favorite. Doc's has done a full analysis of this fight and has put forth a fantastic pick and a very good value as well.
