Football Betting: Early Week Line Movements
by Robert Ferringo - 10/6/2009
According to legend, early in the week is the time when professional bettors make some of their moves - the other most important time is just prior to kickoff - and they tear apart the ripe lines from the Las Vegas Sports Consultants. For the last two years I have tracked the opening steam movements of lines in both college football and the NFL. The idea was to see if the "sharp" money was really that, or if the idea of trailing these severe early line movements was merely a myth. Well, I'm glad to say that we are back at it this season and ready to build on last year's research.
AL Divisional Series Predictions: Angels Vs. Red Sox
by Robert Ferringo - 10/6/2009
For the majority of this decade the American League has been a big game of scissors, paper, rock. The New York Yankees (rock) can't beat the Los Angeles Angels (paper). The Angels (paper) can't beat the Boston Red Sox (scissors). And the Red Sox (scissors) can't beat the Yankees (rock).
MLB Handicapping: Minnesota Looks for Magic on Second Straight Night
by Robert Ferringo - 10/6/2009
An emotional Monday Night Football win by Minnesota over Green Bay last night the Metrodome will likely be the staging point for another rowdy, bare-chested, beer-infused mob this evening for perhaps an even more emotional Major League Baseball playoff game.
NFL Power Rankings Week 4

There is no doubt that the Ravens have been a wrecking crew through the first few weeks. And they have enough people kissing their asses right now. So I’ll go this way: the Broncos are getting killed for their pathetic schedule but the Ravens have only played Kansas City and Cleveland. Just throwing it out there. Heir next five opponents have a record of 12-3 so far this season so we’re really going to see if the Ravens are worth of the top spot in Doc’s Sports Power Rankings.

Last weekend was another rare, rare down week for the F-15. It’s been pretty stunning actually; as for the first time in Ferringo 15 history the teams in this space had back-to-back collective losing weekends. For the season that is now just a 22-25-1 mark. However, I still feel like it’s a long season and that the value will increase as the season tracks on.

And a very definitive theme is starting to develop in this space. The early college football movements once again got creamed last week, going just 1-5 against the spread. The NFL, however, softened the blow while posting a perfect 3-0 mark. For the season, the college early line movements are just 8-18 ATS while the NFL moves are a solid 6-2 ATS. Overall, the early big movers are just 14-20 ATS. Here is this week’s action:

Statistics lie. And they are particularly devious early in the season. Stick with your convictions and base your moves on what you have actually seen on the field this year, not what people have been talking (or, more likely, screaming) about on Monday and Tuesday. Here is a look at my Doc’s Sports Power Rankings

Although Washington pulled one of the biggest upsets we’re likely to see this year and Clemson came through with a Game of the Year winner for us, overall it was a terrible weekend for the F-15. Our clubs went just 4-9-1 last weekend and in most cases were rocked by their opponents. After two straight winning weeks for the F-15 that is a rare loser. On the season our squads are just 17-17-1 heading into Week 4 so it’s time to shake some things up and make some drastic changes. With that in mind, here is this week’s Ferringo 15:
Ferringo Report On NFL Week 2
by Robert Ferringo - 9/22/2009
Below is the Ferringo Report, which are my random and nonsensical ramblings about last week’s action. I didn’t break down all of the games this week (there were three two that I don’t mention in here) but all of this should just give you a little bit of an idea of some of the things I noticed while either watching the games in real time or breaking down the tape on Monday.

Once again, those people late to the party came up short on the early line movements. Last week the college teams we tracked went just 2-4 against the spread while the NFL teams went 1-1. For the season, the heavy line moves are just 7-13 ATS in college and 10-15 ATS overall. Here is this week’s action:
The Ferringo NFL Report
by Robert Ferringo - 9/18/2009
Well boys and girls, the Ferringo Report is back by popular demand. I will have my weekly nonsensical ravings and rants in this space for your viewing pleasure. Week 1 is in the books and, with few exception, things went pretty smoothly and according to script. Don’t worry though: that will change soon enough.
NFL Power Rankings Week 2
by Robert Ferringo - 9/17/2009
Week 1 is in the books and I have to say that with few exceptions there were very few surprises in the NFL’s opener. In fact, things seemed just a little too easy last week. But since this sport is The Beast, I can assure you that there will be more upsets and insanity this Sunday when the pros tee it up.

The Ferringo 15 is my Profit-Power Rankings, a ladder or hierarchy based on which teams are the most profitable on the field. I’m not trying to give you some other nonsensical, random, speculative power rankings based on my own biases and conjecture. So instead of Ohio State moving up or down the polls on the basis of how badly they blew out Northwestern the previous Saturday, I’m going to rank each team based on past, present, and projected future achievement against the spread.

NFL Power Rankings Week 1

I did not change the order of my NFL Power Rankings from last week to this week. Sure, some things have changed around the NFL. But after months of projection, conjecture, and pontification I am done trying to establish my imaginary landscape of professional football. I’m done. For now. It’s time to play some football and then base our predictions and projections on some visceral experience.

Polls. Our culture is permeated by swarm of focus-group happy vagrants who value style over substance. And in the sports world there is no area where this plague is more rampant than college football. My former sports editor back in New York used to say that college football is nothing more than a glorified beauty pageant.

Money players are the guys who come through. Money players are the guys who make a difference. Money players are the guys who move the line depending on if they are healthy, angry, or motivated. Money players are the guys that turn everything around when you are in your most desperate, distraught, distressed state each weekend.
